Anyone still watching Dexter? I'm a HUGE fax of the show, but I've only seen the first two episodes of season 5 and the show just doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be.
I know that a couple of the show-runners have left, but I never thought that the quality of the show would change so much. The writing, the pacing... everything seems to be a little off. Enough to make me ambivilant about watching the rest of the season. I loved the previous seasons so much that I could watch a whole season in one or two marathon sessions. Without going into spoilers, can someone tell me if the season gets any better after the first two episodes? I need to decide if I'm going to continue to invest my time into this series or not.
It does get better after the first two episodes, but it's a slow-starting season, no question. The quality improves by the time you're on Episode 5 or 6. (I forget how many we're up to now). I still think the first season is the best, though.
You know, I think one thing that is getting a bit stale is the way Dexter kills. It's always the same and you know what's going to happen to the bad guys.
It would be more interesting if the kills were a little more creative.
I still love the show though. I practically count the minutes until the next episode.
Well, he's a serial killer. The ritual is part of the package. Plus, every time he deviates from formula, he lands himself in hot water.
I gave up two episodes in. It started out well, but is looking like another case of Doakes-stumbling-onto-Dexter-itis.
The Doakes-Redux thing is sort of there, but it's played differently. I'm actually really impressed with the acting by the guy who plays Quinn, and the whole thing gets a lot more complex due to Quinn's relationship with Deb (that's not really telling you any spoilers if you watched the first two episodes).
I am getting a little tired of the emotional "OMG! He almost got caught!" beat they keep hitting. It just doesn't work on me anymore, and I find it distracts from the rest of the more interesting plot threads. Dexter's relationship with Lumen is particularly interesting to me, and I'm curious to see where it goes. I do, however, think that there are a few too many storylines this season. You have the Santa Muerte murders, the whole "Angel/Laguerta" storyline, the main storyline, the storyline with the nanny, and the interwoven storylines of Quinn/Deb and Quinn hunting Dexter.
It's a few too many balls in the air, I think, and it detracts from the focus on any one of them. And that's also with 2-3 episodes at the start wrapping up the "Rita and her kids" storyline. As a result, I've found aspects of this season to be really sort of half-assed, although other aspects are great.
Overall, I'd say this season is a pretty mixed bag. When it's on, it's definitely on. But it's also off fairly frequently. If they go on after this season, I think they should do one more and just wrap it up.
