First Field Test

19/8/12 - Field Test

It was yesterday's road show for TGX. The real field Test. The knees didnt hold as well as I thought it would; gave way halfway thru but luckily it was still being supported enuff to walk around.

Helmet fans and the fan on the back of the armor helped alot.

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Would you be able to possibly share your thoughts on ventilating your suit? I am interested in the fans and batteries you used for your helmet! I have been working on my War Machine, and with the neck seal in place, helmet on and face plate closed, It feels like I am almost water tight LOL! I use the air up in the helmet very fast and need to ventilate it!
Your help and ideas would be greatly appreciated my friend
BTW the suit looks awesome and I am sure you had a blasT!!

Thanks for the kind comments. My suit is still mediocre at best compared to the proppers here.

As for the Fans, I just did What I had to to make it practical and useful; to be able to get as much circulation as possible. It may not look asthetically pleasing but it gets the job done for me and it saved me from passing out in the 3 hr field test I had.

IM_helmFan.jpg

a small CU fan powered by a 12volt batt. The fan draws air in from the mouth opening.

im_backfan.jpg

A slightly larger CPU fan as the power with my chest light from a battery used for RC cars. A hole is cut from the 'cup' of the brace. Circulates a fair amount of air to be felt throughout the torso; which is what we want to cool down.

Was thinking of painting the fan blades the same red. But was too lazy to do so in the end.

hope it gave u some idea of your own~

Brilliant dude, I love your suit btw.

I think my suit is almost done with revisions before I go to Dragoncon this year. After this I'll be jumping over to resin and fiberglass, while still working with foam on other projects.

I took the suit over to Mizu with a good amount of success. I think the newest thing I have so far is a built in speaker system that's plasting AC/DC, that was a bit of a reaction getter.

My final fix will be strapping the lower legs to the thighs, so they dont fall down and look weird. Other than that, I still cannot thank you guys enough for making a build like this possible.

I also note that while I look at this picture, something is off about the proportions, I dont know why but I seem to think ninja turtle when I look at it. If anyone can shed some advice about this I'd be happy as I can fix it when I rebuild everything.

I appreciate the pictures and information very much! :)
I was thinking of using Lipoly batteries and small fans as well, I think the only thing you could do is paint the blades red and put a set of louvers or mesh across that to decrease the presence of the opening/ :cool The War Machine torso has so many nooks and crannies I should be able to mount the fan under the back flaps and leave them open or do vents in the shoulders ... Thank you again very much, and don't sell yourself short it is a good suit! There arent an army of folks out there running around in armor and every suit is a work in progess that we hope to improve with each incarnation otherwise even in the comics and the movies, Iron Man would still be MK1! You did good! Can't wait to see more of your work!

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

The second one linked is a perfect thickness for most of the suit. The first one would probably be hard to work with.

I'm not too fond of the camping mat stuff though; it's so soft and squishy that using a non-felt pen to trace the templates on just dig grooves into the surface. The surface is delicate and fingernails/Scotch tape scrape it fairly easily. Also the giant roll is pretty unwieldy. But some people like it because it has no texture at all, which is good if you're not going to plastic coat it.

I haven't tried anything else yet but wandyfoam on ebay is a favorite around here and they offer 6mm foam as well, in sheets. Can anyone who buys from them confirm that their foam is not as soft as camping mats?

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

These are great started my build in July it is coming along nicely with little to no problems. Except (theres always one) for strapping the thing for wearing.

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Hi guys am totally new to this stuff, but wanting to try IM mk3 for Halloween would I have time? Also on average how many foam camp mattresses to do a full suit?

Thanks in advance and I hope I can pull off something close to th stuff yous do

Five mats should just about do it as long as you are careful not to waste too much in the way of offcuts, Six will do it with spare.

Thanks Stealth will use some of those ideas but I want a bit more articulation in the ab area. Think I got it figured out.
Having allot of trouble on the legs though. Any ideas how to keep them in place?

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

I'm building an Iron Man Mark VI for my 5 year old and a War Machine for my 3 year old. I hope to finish both by Halloween. I've started with the Iron Man helm (far from perfect as I'm discovering better ways to build as I move along).

Thanks well I've downloaded and printed the helmet and got a matt to start so fingers crossed I'll not screw this up haha, I'll be sure to do a WIP thread and ask for help all the time haha.

Wish me luck thanks again :)

If you make a mistake use a hairdrier to seperate the parts and then try again. Glue seeping out of seams can be reheated this way and smoothed over with a wet finger.

Goodluck:thumbsup.
