Deadmau5 Head Concerns/Questions

Hello, I hope I have posted this in the correct area.

I researched various threads on here about Mau5heads and I have decided to build one.

I have realized that the heads have varied since creation over the years and I also realized Joel posted "official specs". But those don't seem quite right, even for the original.

I am interested in making the two variations. The more original/cloth head version and the more hard based version.

It seems that the original ears are further spread apart while the new style are closer. I keep seeing soo many variations of even the red head that I don't even know where to start. Some eyes look closer to the mouth, while the original specs show the eyes 2" up from the mouth. Quite confusing.

This blue head for example looks like the mouth is higher than the base line center of the globe. Or is this just my eyes fooling me? Maybe its just the stitching part throwing me off? or that the fact that the head opening is angled back.

But I guess this is all part of creating a Mau5head. Any suggestions/advice about this would be nice.

PS. These dimensions look about right for the hard heads. This was a guy who made a replica cheese head...but not the original winner. I believe the guy is on this forum.

Second, I know Joel stated that on the "official" measurements, the ears are at 15*..that looks somewhat right but I feel I have seem some heads at 90*. Thoughts?

Anyway, thanks! and I hope I enjoy my stay :) Site has some awesome costumes! :thumbsup

Hey there VIP3R! i hear what your saying! the dimensions in the "official" post are wrong! for sure! the dimensions you have posted there are right though! and when i did my head (WIP) i did the ears back at the 15* angle, it looks correct to me. the 90* looked way off. you may have already seen this, but if you are looking for a good guide to look at, this is pretty much the way to go! its the Cheese-head, but it helped me a lot!

I wish i had those other dims when i started! i had a lot of trial and error! But good luck on the build! i cant wait to see how it goes!

Definitely go with the dimensions provided by 2StoryProps. They are pretty much bang on and give you an excellent starting point.

If you follow their dimensions good things can happen. Here are some pics of my projects currently on the go:

Hey there everyone, I'm the guy who made those new dimensions. I just wanted to step in and state my reasoning for developing these new dimensions, just so that everything was on the table. ;)

Joel's original dimensions were for one of his original cloth heads. Since then, the dimensions and angles have varied slightly per rendition. The cloth heads themselves even vary slightly, so you can't take Joel's dimenions of a single head and use them across the board. They make a good-looking head, but if you're trying for accuracy, you'll need to pay attention to the specific head you're trying to replicate. These dimensions that I've developed are for the Cheese Head specifically, but they end up working for most, if not all of the hard heads (excluding the LED heads, which are actually quite different).

The hard heads all seem to share dimensions and angles, but are dramatically different from those of the original cloth heads, let alone Joel's dimensions. My measurements were based on several weeks of research, carefully watching videos online, scouring the internet for photos from various angles, and taking my own frame-by-frame screen captures of the Deadmau5 Meowington Hax Tour movie available on iTunes (which features the Cheese Head itself from virtually every angle, except top and bottom).

I'll be the first to tell you that they are not official in any manner what so ever, and as such, they are probably inaccurate to the "actual" measurements of the newer style heads. However, using the measurements that I have developed from the aforementioned research, you can build a head that very closely resembles the measurements and angles of the newer style hard heads. (To help illustrate, if you build a Cheese Head or a 5-ball Head with the measurements and angles of the original cloth head dimensions, it would look way wrong. The ears would be too far apart and a totally different shape, and the mouth would be way too large in all aspects.)

Happy building! Crazy awesome carbon fiber work!

EDIT: Also! Please keep in mind that my measurements were taken off of my Cheese Head AFTER I built it! They were not developed while I was building it. I was going off of "how it actually looked" while I was building. So if you think a 1/8" this way or that way works better, by all means, divert from the dimensions I developed!
