Darth Malgus Costume Finished Pics-Page 8 Vid-Page 9

Re: Darth Malgus Costume WIP

Before I did a try on I had a bash at making the spine detail on the back of the neck which attaches to the breather mask. I wasn't going to make this originally as it will probably never be seen due to the rather large Sith hood he wears most of the time.
So using my new best friend foamex I cut and glued a former together, then moulded it in fibreglass.

I needed to hide the wire that supplies the power to the breather so I threaded that through the mould and poured the mould up using some black Ecoflex silicone.

Next I very carefully glued it into position and filled any gaps.

After adding some more veins and giving the whole thing a coat of black it helped blend it into the existing mask better.

The breather mask now sits nicely and locates into the small box on the back.

I could resist having a try on with all the parts I have so far. Got a good friend to take a few pics, strictly shoulders and above!! Lol
This gives me an idea of what needs improving/changing.
The mask is sitting a little high on the face in these pics but a small adjustment has now corrected that.

Dude you made of my dreams come true, i`ve always wanted it to see that character as if it was real. Can`t wait to look at the final product.

Amazing and mind blowing.

Re: Darth Malgus Costume WIP

Thanks guys! :)
I think I will address that scaring on the cheek issue. Just need to see if I can take it back a few notches and make it look scarred instead of charred! The opacity of the silicone paint will determine if this will work or not.
Hmmm fan film you say?!?!

It's completely doable. :thumbsup

Mix your pigment and silicone...dilute and airbrush over the red charred area. Light coat at first...then dry it right away with a heat gun.
Go over with second layer...and dry with heat again.
Then, your third and fourth passes can be done in waves...allowing for some of the red tissue to still be seen but ever so slightly. If you do this in layers you'll end up with a translucent skin color that allows for the red flesh to be seen through where and how much you wish it too.

Personally, I wouldn't hid the red entirely, but letting it be seen through the pigmented silicone is without a doubt an option.

Good luck bud...this rocks big time.

Darth Malgus Costume WIP

I just found this thread. This is the most incredible and unbelievable build I have ever seen.

Re: Darth Malgus Costume WIP

It's an incredibly great work. (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Soon, I'll begin the same for my Darth Vader's armour, that I wish very accurate. I've already bought material. :D

Thanks mate, I totally agree with you! I would ultimately leave the scarring red to lightly come through, however as I mentioned in an earlier post I finished this more 'charred than scarred'. ie there is a hell of a lot of black and dark browns layed down. I didn't post up a pic of the finished burn. ( I'll see if i can find a pic to post up) My worry is that the translucent white won't cover the black bits without looking too heavy. Maintaining that skin translucency is key as that is how i produced the paint job on the rest of the mask. I'll have a play on a test piece to see what I can get away with before I attack the mask. :thumbsup

Re: Darth Malgus Costume WIP

Whilst im working out what to do with the mask I thought I'd have a go at the boots.
This seems to be the norm using foamex so I may as well continue.
Once again I played around with some cardboard templates and then cut the shapes out of 5mm foamex.

With boots stuffed with news paper to provide a former I heated and shaped the the foamex around the actual boot.

Then added the detailed grooves and facets with the regulation malgus paint job on top.
Finally I used Tech-7 to bond the plates to the boot.
On the ankle and heel of the boot I used 10mm EVA foam af it has much more flex. This was treated in the same way as the foamex then top coated with black Plastidip .

I've had to modify the armour plating on the boot a little as you would not be able to walk properly if the armour covered the entire top of the foot. Yet again one of the issues when turning an animated character into a real world one!
Having finished both boots it just bugged me that these were too ergonomic and didn't have that really angular faceted look of the concept pics.
So I had a rethink and and recut some pieces and glued them into position.

The revised version is on the left the original on the right. I was happy with the new look so went on and produced the second one. It was also more conducive to the beaten up weathering. The angular look also works much better with the grieves and knee armour.

The zoom gallery on sideshowtoy has some great close ups of the premium format figure....
