Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

I have a question for fiberglass experienced people out there. I followed Stealth's youtube tutorials so far and on the strengthening he said to get disposable cups to mix the resin into. I also got the exact brand he suggested on the video (smoothing 100/101). Okay so I mixed it into the cup and after a while the cups melted and the bottom got really hot and it started smoking. I immediately put it outside. Did I get the wrong cups? What should I use?

i found this happens with most of the smoothcast products except for the rebound rubber. i would make it a habit to change out the cups each time you you mix a new batch of resin or use a metal pie pan. so i assume it would be the same case with most polyester resin types :)

Alright, I'll get something metal. Is the resin easy to clean out of the metal pan? Do I need something like acetone to clean?

in most cases the pie pan should be thin anuff that you can just pop the hard resin out of it. so you may want to get a few of them so you can just put one aside after your done with that batch of resin and just rotate the pans out. you should be able to get the pie pans at the local grocery store or just get a few marie callender apple pies. eat the pie get the pan :popcorn

this is what your looking for
Wilkinson 11 11/16" Extra-Deep Foil Pie Pan 125/PK

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

The catalyze of the resin is an extremely exothermic reaction. So, the heat is normal and you can use strong disposable cups (yeah, that sounds quite contradictory) or indeed something metal.

Haven't gone in strengthening phase myself but I got thick crystal clear disposable cups. Will give feedback.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I will used the pans just for the ease. Trying to spend my money on the things I will be showing off. I also found this little glass thing for cup cakes I might try. I'm nervous about plastic after the chemical reaction I just had in my home. Lol

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

So i made 3 pap helmets and i Got a question and i think i know the answer but ill ask anyways.
About the test helm by sharkmark MK VI for those who have made it.
how did it fit. and what i mean is when your putting it on dose it just slide on?or did you have to move it around.my ears and nose seem to be giving me an issue
when im putting the helm on i have to put my nose in first but i feel the paper bend when i slid it on. so i know once make the real helm and harden it i wont be able to get into it even with the back off.the scale is at 1.0 and the helm is not snug when its on. i can scale it up so i can put it on easily but then i have way to much room in the helm. so option 1 would be make it bigger and pad the inside option 2 maybe mod the chin on the mask so i can get my big nose in the mask. has anyone eles had this issue?
one other question.dose the back of the helmet touch your head feels like there is a lot of extra room .i know some of it will be taking up by the fiberglass stage but it feels like a good 2-3 inches of free space in the back of the helmet which could mean i need to scale down but then i run into the nose issue again

any help would be great
Thanks Xeno

The helmet will not slip on over your head. If it does then it is way too big. Take a look at how other people are building their helmets and/or how they did it in the movie... One thread I recommend reading is the helmet build by ProjectEarth7. You will see that a section has to be cut out from the back of the helmet so that you can get it on your head.

That's how Marvel did it, that's how TheRPF does it, and it has worked out pretty well so far. ;)

Everything's on the first post:

Unfortunately, without the password you cannot scale the files which is imperative for a build like this. Now, I am sharing the password via PM

And for the scaling:

Tips for building pepakura files:
Scaling can be difficult. There are many different methods out there. My suggestion would be to find your default scale. This can be guessed based on your height.

5'3" - 5'4" try in between scale 22 - 23
5'5" - 5'6" try in between scale 23 - 23.5
5'7" - 5'8" try in between scale 23.5 - 24
5'9" - 5'10" try in between scale 24 - 24.5
5'11" - 6' try in between scale 24.5 - 25.5
6'1" - 6'2" try in between scale 26 - 26.5
6'3" - 6'4" try in between scale 26.5 - 27.5

Then use the measurement tool (right-click in the 2D window and select it from the pop-up menu) to take specific measurements between any two points/vertices on the 3D model. This allows you to check the diameter of the openings that your arms and legs need to fit through as well as being able to check certain lengths and any other measurement that you think might be helpful. Just compare these measurements to measurements that you take of your own body parts.

So you should try a scale between 21 and 21.5 and use measurement tool.

i was talking about the test helmet for getting the size right. i have already read all of projectearths page. i was asking if the test helmet should slip right over my head.
