Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Now showing V2 teaser pics**

big thanks to darkside and docholiday and others that helped.

the suit came out AWESOME. has sustained battle damage from the party last night but was worth all the time and effort, a total of a month and half i spent on this suit. i still have the abs wraparound, flaps, finglets, and boots to build. maybe redo the pods.
but everything else i can salvage and touch up.

my arc reactor has a tri color led in it that pulsed different patterns, but showed blue in most of my pics. palm light came in real handy, and the helmet was the icing on the cake.

the colors i used were doc holidays method of plastidip process + duplicolor metal speck red, duplicolor sunburst gold, and duplicolor perfect match universal chrome. humidity has been ultra high lately so i didnt get a chance to clear it so its a bit dull but i think its a bit more realistic like that

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Now showing V2 teaser pics**

Hey Darkside.. are the V.2 Files gonna line up with the V.1 Files.. Meaning if I have a V.1 Chest will it line up with a V.2 Back of the same scale.

Yes, I think for the most part they will. I am changing the shape of some parts so I can't really make that promise but I am not starting the build from scratch so, for the most part, they should match up.

You're welcome. The suit looks great. Doc certainly has some good techniques.

I will LOVE to do a Mk VII just need help :behave

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Now showing V2 teaser pics**

Well, after months of work, I think I need to call it a quits to have my suit ready for this year.

Everything is assembled except for the helmet, which needs some tweaking. I also got everything sealed in glue, however...

Priming and painting turned out to be a HUGE problem

I was going to use the Duplicolor paints others have used - dark cherry metallic and sunburst gold. I also bought the Duplicolor primer. Each one of these is $7.50 a pop, and I bought 2 cans of primer, 1 can of gold and 2 cans of red.

I went through 1 can of primer on about 1/5 of the parts.

To do the rest of the primer and 2 coats of paint at this point will be over $100, more than 50% of what I've already put into the costume, and I think more than what I can handle in a day.

My garage looks like one of Dexter's kill rooms right now.

I'm amazed at how strong of a smell those Duplicolor paints have. Even though I was working in the garage, my whole house reeks.

Am I doing something stupid here? Are people following a different/cheaper process for doing this? I hate to stop now, but right now about $100+ dollars is just not in the budget.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Now showing V2 teaser pics**

.. don't ever get into Moulding your suit. I buy everything in the 2 gallons, plus a few products I had to test out, plus screw ups and repeats. I've done the helmet and I can't even begin to tell you how much it has cost me. Oh well, I stay in a lot and work on it, so that money would just go to partying anyways.

correction, I'm NOT even done the helmet.. still have to paint it, hinge it, robo-awesome-ify it.

Darkside, is there a rough date as to when these files will be released? Also, I've started cutting up the chest piece from your V1 files. I'm about halfway done. Has there been some major improvements on it and should I scrap it and wait? Or can I go ahead with it and just bondo the small differences?

Thanks,
Darian

Yeah, the paint can be the most expensive part of the build. It is definitely something that should be accounted for when planning for expenses. That sucks that you wont be able to finish it right now.

Yup molding and casting something is very expensive. It is close to $100 just for a gallon of the silicone rubber to make a mold. Then if you screw it up you are out $100. A lot of people don't realize how much it costs and how much time it takes to do the molding and casting. Although, I think most people on this forum are a little more informed than most.

I am not going to give a date for the V2 files. I am working on them with as much spare time as I can... I haven't played any video games in like 5 months. :cry but stuff can come up cause I do have a life to maintain, lol

I will keep you all posted and as it gets closer to completion I will start letting you all know.

Bad news I was at a halloween party in my suit and had to break up a fight. one piece survived, the chest of all things.

Damn, that sucks. You should have been wearing the steel, Kevlar coated suit that samurai169 is making.

What kind of glue did you use on it? It looks pretty good but I would recommend tabbless pepping on small detailed parts like this. It makes the finishing stage a lot easier. Also, I use supper glue cause it takes up less space than other glues and dries a lot faster. It also spreads more easily so that you can join the faces completely.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Now showing V2 teaser pics**

Hey all- this is what I ended up with for my MK VII using Darkside's unfolded foam files. Thanks to Darkside, Stealth, and the entire community for their tutorials and input- it won me some adoring fans and some $$!! I'll definitely be doing a v2.0 once they are released. Not bad for my first build, eh? :)

(also seems I cannot post pics I already posted in my own thread for the suit... so check out my thread for more pics!)

What is tabless pepping? Is there any tutorial out there? I tried google, but i didn't find anything useful...:darnkids

Also,no new pics Darkside? :popcorn :popcorn :popcorn :love

I tried pepping Zabana's hands right after the helmet, but the result was crappy and i abandoned it for now... In the mean time i found here on the RPF a low poly version of the hand (i can't give proper credit but i think the model behind it is still zabana's even if it was modified by someone else) but the unfolding was crappy,so i reunfolded it and will build it next week...
If the result is not so bad i will share it here (if it's not against the rules) and post my result.

BTW i finished the chest and i'm starting the shoulders right now :lol will post pics as soon as i can!

I have made changes to the shape of the chest and to some of the details. Plus I will be making a HD version with all the bells and whistles and a LD version to make it easier to pep for the beginners.

All n all they both look like the Mk VII chest but of course the V2 is more accurate.

Tabless pepping is where you either select 'No Tabs' before you print or cut the tabs off in certain areas. What happens when you use cardstock to build a pep piece and you have one part that is flat with another part? If you glue the one part on the tabs from the other part then you now have a little step up in what is supposed to be a smooth surface. So with tabless pepping you cut the tabs off of the parts that are supposed to lay flat against each other and cut 'bridges' that are glued to the inside/underside of the two parts. The bridges hold the parts together instead of the tabs. This way the parts are now even/level with each other. So you part is more accurate (closer to the model - the thickness of the tabs throws off the dimensions of the pepped part.), smoother, and easier to finish. You don't have to do this on parts with sharper angles because the tabs don't cause the same unevenness there.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Now showing V2 teaser pics**

Wow... just got released from jail, and I see you guys have been busy.

Glad to be back, and happy to see a v2 teaser for the Boot, Darkside.

NICE.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Now showing V2 teaser pics**

Hi all, just wanted to say thanks to Darkside for the Iron Man Mk 7 templates, everyone who did the foam versions, and all the useful info shared on this forum. This was of massive help with the costume we made for our little boy this year, and it was a hit at the Halloween parties! I only discovered you could build a foam replica suit in such detail two weeks before my son's first party so we couldn't do all the pieces for a full suit as awesome as everyone has made on this thread, but we managed to put together something nice that he and his friends enjoyed.

Here's a video of the build and the final product, hope you all enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-Fje5M3kfmg

Oh, and I think I missed out thanking Stealth, I relied on his tutorials to figure out the tricky parts to the foam build. Huge thanks!
