Dark Sector Costume Research

This is the main character from the game Dark Sector.

(Click for larger)

I'm in the planning and research stages of making this costume until I can actually afford the production stages. (Work issues :angry) I've already had a little help on the clothing for this character with the posts so far from all you helpful people as you can see below.

Overview:

Shirt - I'll be using a thermal undershirt for a likeness to the pattern used in the game for now and making modifications from there. If someone finds a source for the fabric the likes of which is being shown in the images below, please list it in this thread and I'll do the same if I find it first. The pattern is most like a ribbed knitting of some sort.

Pants - Possible motorcycle pants as pointed out by Ramiel. Found a similar style, but looking for alternates. Most likely, I'll make these from scratch as well.

Glove(s) - Really an after thought at this point, but I'll come back to these once the rest is done or close to being done. Though, if anyone knows what kind they most resemble or where I could get some, again list it in this thread and I'll do the same if I find them first.

Boots - Pretty much in the same boat as the gloves.

Pistol(or Tekna 9mm) - Modeled after an HK USP 9mm. Looking for a non-working replica. Also available as airsoft. I'll need to make a few customizations for the final overall look.

Arm - E-mail from Smooth-On received regarding coloring/metallic finish. Still trying to decided which silicone will be best to use for such an application. See Post Update.

Glaive - Sculpted along with the arm.

Re: Identify Clothing for Game Character?

The shirt base is a military-like sweater with leather (or pleather) accents under the arms, on the sides of the shirt, and on the sleeves (and I'm afraid to say that should be custom-made if you want to replicate the look:)), also the zippers on the sleeves should be applied by yourself...
So buy a military sweater and start modding it!;)
I've seen similar pants out there, but I'm not sure how those are called... Try to take a look at hunting clothing or motorcycle clothing to find a close match... I hope this helps a bit:)

Re: Identify Clothing for Game Character?

Yeah I was afraid it was a completely custom sweater. I have to try and find one of those military sweaters without the shoulder patches then. Unless they're just sewn on top of the sweater as that would make things much easy.

Thanks for the tips on the pants too. I'll have to look into that then.

...

Has there ever been a costume of a game character that was based on real life clothing ? I think not, and I flipped through the "1000 game characters"-book.

I think the folks developing game art don´t care much about reality unless it is about vehicles or weapons ;)

Good luck with the project, I always seeing enjoy fictional characters brought to life, especially when there is a great deal of interpreting to be done on the creators side. :thumbsup
This sometimes goes bad, like a lot of the manga kids where their costumes look like 2D-paper cutouts where a little r&d and creative use of interesting fabrics (if money is NOT a matter, which unfortunately often is not the case) could really bring a character to life. An interpretation of a comics costume a la Batman or X-Men might be a good source of inspiration.

Re: Identify Clothing for Game Character?

I've been after just the right clothing from "Shenmue" for 10 years. I know his jacket is an A-2, but finding the patches/making the tiger patch is gonna be a pain. :(

Re: Identify Clothing for Game Character?

Ok so, I think modifying an existing shirt is going to be much more work than scratch building it. So, now I'm on the hunt for the shirt's fabric. The commando sweaters that are the closest match I can find to this shirt are made mostly with wool. Double knit tight ribbed wool to be exact. I've looked online for this fabric and haven't found any main sources, yet. I have yet to get a chance to visit a fabric store to see first hand what they do and do not have.

Any one know for certain where I could get this double knit tight ribbed wool or similar fabric?

Re: Identify Clothing for Game Character?

You could try knitting it yourself.

Or you might try to find some polyester fabric that has this texture permanently crunched into the fabric.

Yeah, I have an idea that won't end well.

Started searching for alternative frabrics, but no luck yet.

Edit:
Stratch the previous statement as I just had a big *doh* moment after realizing what I could use. The pattern is a little small, but it might still work. THERMALS. Thermal underwear tops to be exact. Ran across some tank tops and after realizing they were ribbed the thought hit me that so are cotton thermals.

So I just need to find some black ones and I should be set. Can't believe that really simple answer was staring me in the face this entire time. :lol

Thanks for all the suggestions and help people. Now I'm off to find some thermals.

Also, Ramiel you were almost dead on with the pants. Not exact, but I found a similar style: http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=&L2=&L3=&L4=&item=FTL_FTW285-BZ-SM_G. Still I'll probably keep looking to see if I can't find something a bit cheaper.

Re: Identify Clothing for Game Character?

E-mail received from Smooth-On today about metallic finish on a flexible medium other than their FlexFoam-iT. Posting this just in case anyone else is interested and would find this method useful.

My Question:
I saw the guide on how it can help to make a realistic metallic looking finish on a flexible foam prop.
Shown here: http://www.smooth-on.com/gallery.php?galleryid=084&cPath=1215

My question is, could the same method be applied to any other of your materials such as the silicone rubbers or similar flexible materials?
Reply:
You can definitely add the Cast Magic powders to the silicones. I actually did some testing last week with this very process. There are several ways to approach it that will give you different results. For a silver effect, I found that Cast Magic Silver Bullet added to silicone that has been pigmented grey worked really nicely. Adding it directly into the silicone gave a uniform color. In addition, I dusted the mold with some more Silver Bullet, then cast the silicone behind it (similar to the sword mold sequence). This enhanced the effect.

So there you have it. Now I just need to figure out which type of silicone will best suit this project.
