Daft Punk: Tron Version Suit [pix on both pages]

Re: Daft Punk: Tron Version Suit

WOW. So someone is recasting Volpin's work. I think I need to send Volpin some information. I noticed another similarity. Look at the lines. The one 2nd to the bottom right. The bend has a small hole drilled where the lines aren't as thick. I don't have photoshop right now otherwise I'd enhance the pic. Do you see what I'm talking about?

I see what you are talking about. All the details seem to match up perfectly in the circuit board area.

The helmet does seem to be slightly altered though, the person in question looks like he reshaped the "chin" a bit. But as far as I am concerned there is no doubt in my mind this bucket started out as a Volpin helmet.

Re: Daft Punk: Tron Version Suit

There's actually enough differences to where I would almost say this either isn't one of mine, or at least is a very heavily modified version of it.

To give the guy the benefit of the doubt, I sell my plans in EPS format to anyone looking to buy. That includes the ear schematic pattern. If he bought them then went to have them laser-etched as I did, then they would be identical. Andrea's (ArtFunk) helmet has this as well, because he used my files.

Namely, the ear cones don't look like my raw castings do, the chin is different, and there are 2 extra dots in the ear pattern. Also, the rear dome looks somewhat off as well, but its difficult to tell exactly.

This measurement will be the most telling. My helmet is very wide, a casualty of only blueprinting in two dimensions and a mistake on my part during the build. If yours is also 9.5" wide, then I'm guessing its a mod of one of mine. It would be strange to nail this dimension from my blueprints if it wasn't provided originally.

In any event, not like there's much I can do about it or prove if it is true at all. No worries and hopefully you can get the mods done to make it the piece you really wanted!

Re: Daft Punk: Tron Version Suit

Volpin, if I had known you sold your plans I wouldn't have been so hasty with my accusations.

I'm glad it was brought to your attention and you have taken your stance on the issue. Hopefully Icknaybob can take the measurement you're talking about and put the debate to an end.

Re: Daft Punk: Tron Version Suit

I will indeed when I get home. To be honest...I would still like to purchase a Tron version from you Volpin. I have always been a fan of Guy's helmet [even before I knew it was Daft Punk]. A friend had his picture on her Facebook and mentioned it looked liked the Rocketeer [I'm a finhead] and I fell in love instantly. Now mixing Tron and Daft Punk together is like mixing hot blondes in a tub of jelly = INSTANT WIN!

Re: Daft Punk: Tron Version Suit

Well, Volpin's helmet is a whole inch wider than yours, so I guess that's that. It still may have started out as one of Volpin's casts, but its obviously gone under a lot of mods since then if that's the case, like Volpin suggested in the first place.

Regardless of its history, Icknaybob I hope you're able modify your helmet so its more to your liking!

Re: Daft Punk: Tron Version Suit

yup! Not one o' mine. I really like the chin and lower visor on his build though.

First shot uploaded looks sort of like a pep file, which is interesting - i've never seen a pep file similar to my bucket.

Icknaybob, I got your PM (and about a dozen others) so I'm making my way through responding to them all. I'll drop you a line soon.

Re: Daft Punk: Tron Version Suit

LED Strips came in the mail. They look good! Now I need to hook up all 6 strips together [144 LEDs] and test out power sources.

I also need to re-do the visor. When people take pictures with their flash...you can see into the helmet! I want to vac-form the visor in smoke/black acrylic. Anyone in the Los Angeles area who can help?

Progress...sorta. The LED Strips came in...and they kinda suck. The bulbs are molded into the strip. And as you can see...a few of the LEDs went out and I have to change the entire strip! Anyone know a good source for BRIGHT and good LED strips?

It wouldn't be exactly movie accurate (since they don't use the standard rounded "bulbs"), but you could use the LED strips found at auto stores. They light up super bright, and are all molded into the strip.

Ever consider building the whole array? It's probably just as much work in the end. That's what I'm going to do.

How does one build the whole array? I am not very technically inclined. I usually just guy things and slap them together. LoL. I would love to build my own unit if I knew how. Wanna show me? :D

You could they going to radio shack, buying a bunch of led's and soldering them together in a strip the way you wanted...use the battery system you already have with the previous strips.

Nice job on your helmet! Soldering is not a problem for me. Would you mind posting pix of your array when you're done?

Hmm... if you're not so technically inclined it may prove a challenge. I'd check a place like Digikey for the strips. I started one here:
http://www.therpf.com/f24/daft-punk-guy-manuel-helmet-build-106798/
and I'm using individually addressable lights run off an arduino with a couple MAX7219 chips. I just got the array working last night and looks great, but it's going to be a lot of soldering!

Me and a friend worked on our own suits, but we only found out that after we had completed them that the fabric we had used for the main sections(not the perforated parts) was completely off. The real suits used white leather, where ours was based off the first few shots they released of the figurines, and were a very light tint of blue.

Our suits, which were based off these figurines.

And just as we were finishing up, these images came out in high-res.

Oh well. *shrugs*
