Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

ALSO, Thanks to everyone who has posted pictures of their daft punk builds. I've been using everyones helmet as inspiration and reference to keep me going.

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

i would be interested to know as well, not so much for daft punk helmets. i used some krylon metallic chrome finish spray and it was ****. it consisted of colored spray and metal flakes, and my project ended up fuzzy.

so dont buy that.

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

If you're looking for something quick and passable, I'd grab a few rattle cans and spray the entire thing with a HIGH gloss black coat, then hit it with a light mist coat of silver. It won't be chrome, but it'll be shinier than just a spray silver sprayed in a full coat.

I assume you don't want to pay the high price for a rattle can spray chrome?

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

well actually, Im not really worried about it being mirrored chrome or anything. Honestly I would be happy with anything thats silver that wont rub flakes off onto my jacket. Its just basically made from a usps box, ups stickers and paper mache and Im using a 3 liter bottle for my clear visor plastic and I have a strip of window tint Ill put on top of that.

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

I can also add that dupliucoat chrome does rub off :-( I have a jango helmet I painted way over 4 years ago and it was sitting ontop of my guitar amp for about a week and I picked it up a few minutes ago and noticed it stained my new amp so Im going to have to carefully clean it now :-/
Ill take a few shots of what I have so far as soon as I find my batteries. Ive only been working on it for 2 days but I've made a ton of progress. I should be done in a day or so if I keep up with this pace.

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

If you're really concerned, just spend your money on your clearcoat, and just shake your cans well. I've never had problems with paint flaking off of anything when I've made sure to take the time to sand, prime, shake, and spray and clear coat. Then again, I've only ever really used Rustoleum (I've always just used their rattle cans, don't know why) so maybe it's down to the brand...or maybe I'm just lucky.

On a side note, a similar thing happened to a friend of mine when he went as the Joker. He realized quickly that the green hair dye would rub off on the collar of his clothes. He was fine with this on the coat, the shirt and the vest, but the blazer he had was WAY too expensive for him to damage so quickly. I ended up just giving him a $7 goodwill blazer I had that was a fairly close match. Long story short, you can always get clothes you don't mind messing up. :p

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

Well Nick, I think I'm going to go with rustoleum with some clear coat then. You have a face that I can trust lol. Thank you for your help buddy! So once I shake the can for a while and spray it, any tips for clear coating it with minimal reduction of the shine? Ive tried clear coating silver before and it turned grey.

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

To be completely honest, I still struggle with clear coating. haha

For every "hit" I think I've had 3 misses. (I'm getting better though :p) I think impatience is my problem though. I don't always give each coat enough time to dry.

I would say make sure you give all coats enough time to dry completely and just mist the clear coat slowly and steadily. Shine a light at an oblique angle onto the surface and watch to see if you start noticing an eggshell pattern in the spray you're laying down. If you are, you're probably spraying a little too heavily.

If that doesn't work, wrap it with cling film. :lol

Good luck, I hope my "never had something rub off" luck transfers to you.

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

You've been such a great help!!! THANK YOU. I totally owe you a round of beer!
hope your anti rub magic rubs off onto me. Ill be painting next week sometime Im guessing because paper mache helmets arent the easiest to get super smooth but its going to look nice in the end hopefully. I was thinking about after I get the mache smooth as possible, then sand it. and then put some plaster spackling over it thinly to hide the lines from the paper then use tissue paper and brush that on with some elmers glue, primer it like no tomorrow, wet sand and then it should be ready.
You're the coolest. Thank you for taking the time to help!!!!!!!!!
Normally I wouldnt mind getting paint on my clothes but its a $1000 dress coat thats a tight fitting pea coat.
my total costume im thinking will be that with a tie and white shirt and some tight pants with some leather knee high biker boots.
Not what their suits look like but Im sure it will look better than what I am assuming everyone else will be wearing since I think they costume store shopped. Not bashing store bought stuff btw. Its just I get so much pride from making things myself.
I was going to just buy a nasa jumpsuit but they were out of space helmets for some reason. Im kind of glad they were out so now I can be something I really want to be. I just need to remember to bring a straw for drinking out of because I dont want to take my helmet off. Without it, Ill just look like a swanky biker :lol

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

I used Alsa Corp's Mirrachrome on mine. It didn't turn out that great. I have pics in my flickr.

your helmet looks great, ptgreek

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

I used a Krylon rattlecan for mine. I think it was their premium line or something as they came in smaller, skinnier cans. Then I hit it up with 2 coats of pledge future shine floor wax to seal it in. The chrome doesn't sub off at all and the finish wasn't THAT much dulled out. I got that info from somewhere on this forum I'm pretty sure.

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

oh believe me, I would love a chromed version. BUT this is just a one time wear helmet for me. and I dont think they can chrome paper mache :lol I just need it some kind of silver that wont get on my jacket. All other Thomas helmet makers feel free to show off pics. I have every pic I could find on the rpf saved already :)

HEY AARON... Did you use the future floor shine thats in a clear squirt bottle?
Ive got that somewhere around my house. If thats what you used, did you just take a rag and rub it on or did you brush it lightly?

@Giz, I dont think they sell that anywhere around me.

Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Daft punk thomas spray paint suggestions?

Cosmichroming isnt chroming in the traditional sense ..it is a chrome painting process ..they do all kinds of different surfaces ..just call them and tell them what you are working with ..they are very helpful. Thankfully they arent more the 30 min. away from me...but they take mail orders ..and their turn around was very fast. When I was in there last, they were cosmichroming a whole car for rapper, 50 cent

Thats pretty gangster!! :lol and im not being sarcastic, I found a video of them doing it : http://www.mefeedia.com/watch/28444684

I might actually use them when I do an actual accurate helmet but this is just a quick cheap costume that will most likely end up hanging from my ceiling after I wear it.

Heres what I have after 3 day of on and off work.

I didnt use templates or anything, I just imagined the helmet smashed out flat in my mind and went from there. For the ears Im just going to use some steel reserve211 can bottoms :confused:lol

Rub n buff over a gloss finish should work. If you still want a rattlecan solution, you might try this. Your base coat is very important for making the "chromed" effect look decent.

Keep in mind, that going the cheap route can end up in disaster if you don't get it right. Having a professional do it means that you can at least have the possibility of a refund. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it. I'm not a fan of DP, but the helmets are cool. :thumbsup

Re: Daft punk Thomas Progress/spray paint suggestions?*pics added*

Thanks for the tip DB! I definitely want to go the cheap route. I honestly dont care how chrome it is at all, just as long as its silver and it wont come off on my jacket, that's my main concern :lol

Oddly enough I dont like daft punk minus a handful of songs. But I really dig robot rock, especially the video. Im more into dubstep when it comes to electronic music. Oddly enough the reason I decided on Thomas is that I was going to do a deadmau5 helmet but I didnt want to have to walk around with a huge helmet so I picked another helmeted electronic artist :lol

Re: Daft punk Thomas speed build *4 days so far*

I started working on the gloves tonight and FYI, silver paint WILL rub off of craft foam. I guess I'll just cover each finger plate in aluminum tape.

Bummer. If you have any spray glue, (Or regular glue for that matter) why not glue some mylar (Find yourself an old party balloon) or even aluminum foil over your craft foam base? Do you know how well the aluminum tape will hold? I would think it would come off, but I haven't used Al. tape on many things.

Good luck! Can't wait to see this all come together.
