When you put it that way, it makes it really hard for people to feel bad for me!

So, I sneezed on the helmet.

I meant it with the utmost of respect.
It looks like your mold is birthing some fine specimens. :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

On the final piece, how do you plan to achieve the golden metallic look?

I hope you get over your cold soon

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

Nice job. It was good to see this through all the steps. Now go chrome it.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

I can't belive how sharp the details are in the ears!

Now if you will excuse me, I need to change my pants...

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

That helmet reminds me of the ones worn in the Robotech series with the motorcycles that transformed (In America, Robotech 3)

Outstanding job.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

WOW! I love when new talent like this comes to this board, it makes up for all the whiny newbies and thiefs in the JY!!!

Well done!

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

Haven't really listened to this band much at all, but nice job replicating the helmet. Going to do the other one too?

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

impresive, most impresive.
Will you be casting the clear dome or vac-form?
I would really like one for my record store. I would be wearing all day....

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

Wow, lots of questions...

1) Yes, I will be offering "kits" eventually. You'll have your choice of a resin helmet with or without the visor. I won't be offering these until my original client receives his prop though; I don't think it would be fair for me to sell other people the item he's asked me to make before he gets it. Also, since I'm sending the visor mold to another propmaker for their production, I have to clear things with him first as well.

2) The gold chrome will be vacuum-metalized here: http://www.mmmetalizing.com/

3) Visors will be vacuum-formed out of PETG plastic.

4) Unless someone commissions me to make Thomas' helmet, I don't have any plans to make it. We'll see, my original client has also expressed interest in this. Currently I am booked until freaking April though, so that one might be on the back burner for a while...

Thanks for all the compliments guys! Its been a long road but I'm starting to see light at the end of this tunnel.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build

Sorry for the off-topic bump, but I forgot some people had asked a few questions about the car too. "Phoenix" (thats her name) is a 1975 BMW 2002, not a tii or Alpina, but I have converted it to Electronic Fuel Injection. If you're a car nut, or just want to know about the restoration I did, I have a blog on that too: http://2002restoration.blogspot.com/

To keep things on-topic, here's a quick iphone "myspace" shot of me and the cast helmet. This is a very difficult shot to do when you can't see anything! For reference, I'm 5'8" tall (and I'm also a freaking twig at 135lbs soaking wet), and my client is 6'4" or something huge like that. I've scaled it to fit him, but this shows that it will sit well on a variety of different sized people.

oh yeah, the resin pulls weigh about 1.5 pounds. MUCH nicer than wearing the 15lb clay and bondo sculpt!
