Is this what I think it is?

Decoder ring? I don't get it.

I am following a lead, fellas... a photo I found from a 22 year old publication. Could be a dead end, but it looks promising. Translators are involved, so I have nothing solid or concrete to give yet.

I want to find out where this pic was taken, and who has the goods now!!

oh!

I didn't know what Cygnus meant, (or had forgotten momentarily, rather) so the entire thread was a bug HUH? :lol

LOL - gotcha.

I seem to remember someone saying there were two Cygnus models, and that one was "awol", so I got to thinking (after seeing the pic) that it might have surfaced overseas. I love to hear about the wacky stuff that sometimes happens to the things we loved as kids.

More likely, what you have found may be a surviving piece of a destroyed studio miniature. It's a shame that one was lost during filming (on purpose) and the other is now unaccounted for.

Jason, so excited right now I can hardly type! If you get anywhere, you'll be my hero for ever. :)

I second Charles, though. Most likely this is a souvenired section of the destroyed "top-detailed" miniature.

(OTOH, I'm not aware of even one single photo showing both 'complete' models of the ship in the same shot. Why would that be?)

Wow, I can't believe this keeps popping up. The Cygnus survives. It is in a barn at the moment. This may just be a missing part from it. Nice find Jason.
George :love

George,

The conventional story is that 'top-detailed' Cygnus was destroyed in the filming of the asteroid scene, and 'bottom-detailed' Cygnus was destroyed accidentally some time after her return to Disney from the MOMA exhibit. This was supposedly due to a forklift driver accidentally colliding with her crate on the back lot.

Even Charles Adams (who is pretty much the online Cygnus deity) is under this understanding, AFAIK. If you know better, please tell! Photographs would be nice too. :)

Don't get me wrong - I *badly want to believe you*. Both Charles and I have horrendously overcomplicated CG models of this ship under way and could really, really use some new reference! It's just I've been disappointed too often in this hobby to really believe anything that sounds this good, until there's conclusive proof.

Cheers,
Martyn

I think that it would just be too funny if the Cygnus pops up somewhere, and it turns out all along it has been in someones attic or a box somewhere. Too funny.

I think Charles is the resident expert, I would go with whatever he says.

By the way, great find. Amazing photo. I love the Cygnus. Probably even a little bit more than the Enterprise D!

Guys, don't give me too much credit. I only know what has been reported. I believe it was Brian Johnson who said the surviving model got backed over by a forklift at the Disney warehouse. This was reported at StarshipModeler.com years ago.

All that has been known for sure is that the surviving model went to MOMA in New York for an exhibit. After that, we have no publicly available details. George, I'm sure we'd all love to know more if it has indeed survived. Is it in private hands? Will it ever been seen by the public again?

Thanks! :D

Well, Brian Johnson would be a knowledgeable source, you'd expect. I've always hoped there might be more to the story though. If it is in a barn, I wonder if the barn is in New York state? :)

Cheers,
Martyn

It's probably in that same barn that holds a mint/never driven bathtub Porsche that the kindly farmer will sell you for $500. (hehe)
