Cyberman in FOAM!!! - WITH PATTERNS!!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Good luck with your foam building! I thought this thread was dead, but cool deal there is still some interest in the (now old) Cyberman. I guess I better get off my behind and get foam building to catch up! For those of you who make the cybershade mask from my patterns and prove you don't need no silly instructions, post your finished masks here and I will reward you with patterns and templates for this cyberman! Sound cool? Get cracking!!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

I'm going to have to give this a go. It was your Cyberman that brought me to this forum. I'd been hoping that the patterns would become available after I decided to try a foam costume for Toronto's FanExpo last year. With just over 2 months to go I was able to put together a BSG TOS Cylon that worked out OK. If this test goes well hopefully I can do some DELETING this year

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

guess I'm going to attempt the cybershade mask! Hopefully I'll have it done in a week. And also thank you for this thread! It's really helped me get a better idea of the cyberman costume as a whole.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

okay Mr.wondersquid, I have cut out all the pieces for the cybershade mask but have a couple of questions.

The "nose bridge" piece is a bit hard to read from my printout, does that say 1/8" foam or 1/4" foam? And the nose bridge piece is the only piece I'm not exactly sure where to put it.
Does it go under the face top layer where you raise it the 1/8" to fill the empty space?

And what diameter pvc pipe did you use for the bars?

Thanks in advance and sorry for any trouble I might be causing!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Hey Obiwanamti, I had to recheck myself on this, but I believe the piece is in 1/4" like the base, and there should be a slice you make in the middle of the base coming from the mouth up and this piece is glued in between that slice. It should artificially create a curve.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

okay! now that makes a lot more sense. Thanks!

The mask is almost done so hopefully I'll have finished pictures to share on Saturday

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Alright my mask is finished! For a first foam build it doesn't look too shabby. However I will definitely need to practice cutting curves and circles in the 1/2" thick foam a lot more. Here's a couple of finished photos! Thank you for the cybershade patterns!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Congrats Obiwanamati! That looks great! I will be sending you the Cyberman patterns shortly, PM with you address please. Hold your head high, it looks like you can handle the crazy of my pattern makings!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Wondersquid, I would like to ask who do I have to.... well.... ex...ter.... m.... you know.... to get in on that bandwagon as well..... If I may, these patterns would be very invaluable, I am considering the making of the Cybermen for a long time, and I have followed this thread earnestly awaiting *this* exact moment :)

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

OK, I am back on track working on mine as well. Got a little sidetracked when we started fostering kittens and the mom cat.

Great job Obiwanamati. I hope I can do mine as well as you did.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

I always learn more when i jump right in and try things. This is no different. This is my first serious attempt at anything in foam. So its my first time cutting foam and glueing foam and making mistakes. I hate it when i don't read everything and make assumptions. I had wrongly assumed the whole thing was made out of 1/2" foam. The good news is that in trying to make some of the shapes out of the base with 1/2" foam I actually learned quite a bit.

Next stop is the get some 1/4" and some 1/8" foam to work with. Oh yeah, by the way I am hooked.

Here is a picture of my learning experience.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

I so want to do a Cyberman, is there ANY foam pep files for foam at all out there ? For the body parts as I have a helmet already :) OK so its a toy talking plastic one but I can adapt it.

Mylehigh - Great mistake! Keep at it, there is no wrong way on this stuff, just trail and error, then one day you realize your refining your technique and wham! you have a great piece!

MontagueFlange - As far as I know, no FOAM files, there is pep files around, I have seen them. And the worst problem with the toy helmet is having to make a back head plate, which someone else on the forum did. I'm sorry i don't have the link, but search the site for Cyberman stuff, a lot of people did suits using the toy helmets as starting points.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

okay, sorry for the long wait but here's a newbie foam builder adding to the conversation with some progress pics from Mal's patterns!

First I had to re-size a majority of the patterns for my shortness (I'm 5 feet tall) and I'm still working on re-sizing some parts, but I'll do that as I get to them.

I started with the groin/butt piece as it seemed like the easiest pieces to work with:

all done! (minus a webbing comfort strap)

Next I started work on the chest. In these early parts of the costume I was a little too glue happy and used a bit too much contact adhesive, but I learned a bit from that mistake.

and with the sides on it:

I don't want to make this too picture heavy but I've also assembled the two back pieces and the cyberman chest symbol. Once I get the back pieces attached to the chest at the shoulder and side seams I'll post some more updates!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Looks great! Things are progressing, that's good. OK, let me get the file sharing in order and I think I can finally release the patterns. Hopefully everyone else can make sense of them as easily as your doing. Keep posting pictures, I don't think anyone here is bothered by seeing your progress.

Super stoked you're releasing these. I spent all day trying modify pep files for my foam build and just ended up burning through most of a printer cartridge :p

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Totally awesome Wondersquid. Just Joined the Group, My daughter is doing a talent show and wanted a Dalek. After viewing this it might have to be Cyberman. Never done anything with foam except drink coffee from it hehe. Will have to give the mask ago. Cheers, this is really cool
