Curious why this thread is allowed to exist?

I am going to assume that it's because none of the staff have kept an eye on that thread and no one has given them a heads up, well, until now that is. :lol

I'm really sort of neutral on the whole thing, but feel policies should be maintained.

Or in other words, I'm not offened or bothered one way or another, but I have also - in the past - bit my tongue on political-based issues in respect to the policy.

You know, this happens every election year though. Instead of avoiding it I think the better way to handle it would be to actually setup threads for each candidate. Hear me out. Have one for Hillary, Obama, Edwards, Kucinich, Gravel, Romney, McCain, Huckabee, Thompson, Paul, and Hunter. Each thread would be where ONLY that candidates supporters would go to talk.

For instance, the "hidden" Ron Paul thread has been civil, polite and a nice discussion, then throw in someone like Juno who clearly doesn't like Paul and wants to be snarky and it starts to fall apart.

Religion, politics, and money are always problems, but while religion can be pretty well avoided, and money only comes up with someone rips someone off, the other is more passionate and shows up all the time since it affects so many.

Then as these threads go, people can read them if they want to but if they don't agree they don't post or the post gets deleted. Once a candidate drops out, the thread gets deleted.

Just a thought since there is nearly a year to go and with a few thousand members the RPF is a place that talks about everything, politics really can't be totally avoided.

Good suggestion, Mike...

Again, I'm not trying to be a jerk by getting this thread nuked, but am just a bit surprised. I've got mixed feelings on the "No politics" policy. I fully agree how volatile it can be, but man there have been times when I've really wanted to express my own political views too! :)

PH,
About a year ago I tried to get a "Bar" section open. I think it took 12 posts before it got ugly.

Would this include elections worldwide ?

You know, I don't see why it couldn't. Frankly I'd find it interesting to hear how my friends overseas handle their election processes. Knowing people in England, Germany, Australia and New Zealand it could be really interesting to read.

Seeing as this is a prop board i have no real interest in elections half way around the world even if i do have friends there. I know we have an off topic section but surely there must be other boards to talk about who you vote for?

I have no interest in seeing political discussions mixed with prop-talk!!
I would like to see such banned from the board.. we have to put up with enough of that in our regular life.. especially here in the states, being an election year..
It makes me mad whenever I go to a thread with a 'baited' subject line like that only to be barraged with political bs..I just ignore it, but it's frustrating when all I want to do is talk about a PROP hobby that ALL of us have in common.

Personally, I have a mildly passing interest in politics. I don't follow every runner, but I do like to at least know the basics of what each one stands for.

But to say that it should never, ever be discussed here because this is a prop board is ridiculous. What's next? No more "I need prayers because my family member died" threads? This is a prop board, not an obituary forum. Or how about no more "I'm suicidal" threads, because we're not a psychology board. Or "I'm sick with such and such disease" because we're not WebMD.

Or how about we ban props from non-star wars movies. Let's be honest, 95% of props discussed are star wars based, therefore, star wars must be the defacto movie franchise we're interested in. So, we'll ban people who discuss trek or blade runner or aliens. Sound ok to you guys?

Normally, I don't agree with AVSforums as they tend to be a madhouse. But they do have a system that works. They have a blu-ray only forum, where all blu-ray proponnents can discuss all the aspects of blu-ray. If any HDDVD guys go in and cause trouble, they get banned. And they have an HDDVD forum where people can discuss the aspects of HDDVD. And if a BRD guy goes in and causes trouble, he gets banned. I don't see why we can't have a subforum (not just threads randomly thrown in the OT forum) dedicated to politics for those interested. During election years, there can be threads for pro-party member Y and anti-party member Y and ne'er the twain shall meet. Like Hillary? Post in the "We like Hillary" thread. Don't like Hillary? Post in the "We don't like Hillary" thread. But don't go into the other thread to cause problems. Not interested in politics, don't visit that subforum - it really is that simple.

Just my 2 cents

Ok..you got me there about banning, but Problem is, the post that started this, wasn't labeled as a "United States political thread"
Just the inocuous "How could this happen?" so being a concerned human, I went to read & found it to be (IMO) a "We Love RonPaul" and hate everyone else thread.
If it had been labeled as such I could've easily avoided it.

Uh, no. It wasn't a "We love Ron Paul and hate everyone else thread" at all. It started out as a concern about what happened to someone due to our current government situation. Like minded people just happened to support Ron Paul and started talking about it as an off-shoot to the original post (which admittedly probably should have been changed). There was no nastiness, nor attacks, nothing but just talk among people of a favorite candidate. The thread was very civil and fun, until some snarky comments were interjected which weren't even about a real candidate but someone jumping in to be a smart-aleck.

I see your point threads should be clearly labeled as to there content i find that annoying also.
Such as threads in the prop forum simply labeled with "X Prop" which i instantly think oh cool some info or a show off thread of a prop i'm interested in only to open it and it's a where can i get one thread or does anyone have info on thread.
However that's really a problem with people not having the sense to title correctly rather than the content.
Personally i see no real good reason why politics or religion threads should be banned from the OT forum nobody is forced to open them or even read them, if they do open a poorly titled thread it doesn't take more than 10 seconds to realise if the content is of interest or not and to read on or close it accordingly.
