Cubone Udon Taskmaster

Well bump-date....

I got the mold finished this afternoon, and everything came off really clean. In fact I was able to save my sculpt! Which is good as you will see later on.....

Here is the inside of the mold. See clean.

The sculpt, silicone mold, FB jacket.

And I was excited the mold came out so well, that I did a cast out of fiberglass. But this cast was really flimsy as the fiberglass was still soft in places...even though it was completely cured. I went to put it on my head...AAANDDD...it doesn't fit. It's waaayyyy to small. :/ This really really sucks.

So I had an idea that I was going to do another cast, and I had some two part casting resin on hand. So I did a slush cast with this stuff.

There's the result. I didn't realize how HOT this crap got..and I think it melted the silicone and then bonded to it. It ripped chunks out of my silicone jacket..and it's ruined.

I'm super super bummed right now....it looked so promising and I was so excited. I think I'm going to take a break and re-evaluate how to do this build. I really want to complete this. So if any of you have suggestions I'll be glad to take them...

As of right now I'm just going to resculpt the eyebrows and smooth out the dings from removing the silicone mold. Maybe I can still salvage it so I don't have to start completely over from square one....

Well...another bump-date...the sculpt is ruined. I was mistaken when I thought I could salvage the clay. I tried to work on it, and it broke apart and wouldn't smooth or form.... just one more thing wrong I guess. So it's back to square one...

Also. I think I should put something related to women in my title...or related to iron man. I'd get more traffic that way :p

:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol

it's funny because it's true. good luck on round 2!

Heh I know right?! And thanks! I'm definitely going to need it.

So question for all you casting pro types out there. What is a good thing to make casts out of? I know you can with fiberglass...but honestly there is NO way I want to do more than one more of those. I hate fiberglass...

So what type of casting resins/plastics could I use. I used Alluminite 2-part casting resin. So I want to avoid that again at all costs as it ruined my mold! :darnkids

I want something that is strong like fiberglass, but can be slush cast. It would make it easier for me to sell more pulls as well :p

Just to show the front part of the mask. I had to cut it into two parts cause the length was to short from front to back. It's warped as well cause the fiberglass is short. But it gives you all a sense of how it looks on my face. Without my hood on my face looks fat cause of the thin mouth piece :p

I also think I may have saved my sculpt...we will find out tomorrow...

I am shocked slosh casting did that to the mold! I have never seen anything like that! :confused

You and me both man. hah. I have been racking my brain trying to think of what caused it. The only thing I can come up with is that I used Naptha to thin my silicone caulking. I cleaned the mold and applied mold release but there may have been residual fiberglass resin. And it got to freaking hot. I'm wondering if a combination of any two or all three caused it :confused

I'm still in shock about the whole thing hah.

But good news...I saved my sculpt! I was able to get everything back and re-hydrate it overnight. So I'm not totally screwed! SCORE ONE FOR THE CUBONE!

I also am still looking at what would be the best option to cast these out of. I'm leaning towards Smooth-Cast 300. I think it will give me the results I am looking for. The price tag is a little big though =/ But I guess when it comes to casting you get what you pay for. It makes sense now why cast items are so expensive to buy :lol

Ello all.

So not updates on the sculpture as of yet. I haven't had time to work on it but I plan to tonight.

QUESTION!!!!

I'm looking at using Smooth-cast 300 to cast this thing out of. My question is...could I get away with the trial size? Or should I just not eat for a week and get the full 1 gallon size? I know with the trial size I wouldn't have enough to do more than one probably. But I'm curious as to just how much I could get away with. If I could get two out of the trial size I 'd be stoked!!

this is coming along really nice

Hey thanks! I really should start on the other elements of the costume. But the mask is the most important part in my opinion, and I want to do it right so it's taking priority. I'm hoping that my revamped sculpt will be better than the first. There is a couple things I want to change.

Well I started working on the sculpt again. I redid the eyebrow area. And I have to smooth everything out again. I also have to add about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of length from front to back. So I will do that soon as well.

-Cubone

Well I guess I'll post up again. So I worked on extending the back of my mask out. Like I said previously I need to add about an inch of length from front to back. It just looks like I put a chunk of clay on the back...so no picture :lol But once I get it shaped tonight I'll post one up.

I also am experimenting with thickening fiberglass resin with plaster of paris. I heard about this in place of using a standard thickener, so I was curious if it could be done.

I am still beating my head against the wall...floor...keyboard...headboard...anything hard...about if I should bite the bullet and buy a gallon of Smoothcast 300 to cast with. Would that or fiberglass casts be more desirable to the community if I decided to part ways with a couple? I figured out my fiberglassing problem so I should be able to get good casts now with it.

I'm just really scared about using a 2 part plastic again after the last one ruined my mold :darnkids

Also do I need to do anything else to the facial expression on my mask? Or is the eyebrow area good now?

Input?

Haha, just gotta keep chugging man. Can't really chime in on the casting side as I've never worked with Smooth-on as I am an equally poor student :p, I'd wait for someone more knowledgeable on that subject.

But, after trolling through google images for a good 20 min, I have to agree with you on the style changing from panel to panel :lol, seems like every other pic is slightly different. Overall, I think your sculpt is good for the neutral expression that it has in the majority. Only change that I can see that could be made is for a more aggressive look, but that's up to personal preference as it's not apparent in every reference image as previously stated. Personally, I like how the sculpt turning out.

Hopefully you can get it cast this time around with no troubles. :thumbsup

*sniffles* I'm glad someone still cares about me and this build. I thought it fell into the dark unknown corner of therpf.:wacko

But yeah hah. It makes it REALLY difficult to come up with the "Perfect" mask. And I made the new sculpt have a more mean look now. I may need to exaggerate them even more. But to do that I need MOAR COMMENTS as to how it looks now! :lol

And thanks for the encouragement! I hope to try and mold this bad boy this weekend.

Anyways here is the updated sculpt as it stands right now. The back has been extended about 3/4 of an inch or so. It's pretty symmetrical. But I will fix that in the smoothing stage. So this is the chance to tear apart my work and critique critique critique!!!! I can't get better without people taking shots at me :p

And here is the comparison. Before and after extension!

It looks better to me...and hopefully will fit better :lol

Progress is looking very good.
Did you measure your head so you would know how big to make the sculpt?

Thanks Alpha. And yeah this time I did. I probably should have done that in the first place. The styrofoam head I am using fit so good facial feature wise I just assumed that it was proportionate all the way around to me. But I was mistaken :p

-Cubone

Alrighty so this is kind of a last attempt at getting feedback on the facial features. I know it's not Iron man...or Batman...or Spiderman...and it doesn't have cleavage so it doesn't appeal to 90% of therpf...but I really could use some insight. I think the brow is big enough, but if I do decide to cast these I need to know if people want it even exaggerated more. I'm planning on putting this under silicone tomorrow. So you have a day to tell me if anything needs changed, otherwise the face is staying the same.

-Cubone

Just because I got bored..I quickly and fail painted my fail fiberglass cast. Gives you an idea though.

Forgive my hair...I have to much of it and it likes to eat things I put on my head.
