Yeah I figured you could sand the first mold perfect and recast it. It would just cost a bit for the supplies.

Yeah I was worried about the cost as well. But the Soil Mechanics lab at my college was going to toss a box of silicone caulking...sooo I snagged it. Got enough to do 2 or 3 molds
And I had ton of resin and FB sitting around as well as plaster. So I'm not hurting to badly. Plus I'd rather do it right and get it smooooooooooth. :loveEdit: WOOO! post 100!!! Sorry it's not a super cool update of awesome though =[

So its now under layer two of the silicone mold! Layer three goes on in about an hour. Then I'll finish it up tomorrow! But then I will have to do the FB outer layer etc after I get back from the wedding sadly. So the real updates will come next week!!

That's looking pretty good! If I can offer any criticism, I would say you should try to accentuate the eyebrows more. The images posted by Alpha show that his brow ridge is quite large, and that will give the mask a meaner appearance.
That's just my two cents. The sculpt looks awesome! I've been thinking of taking a crack at this mask myself using EVA foam and bondo. If I do, I want to go for the full helmet look as well.

Ooo. Good point! I'll add that to my cast I pull from this one. The brows looked bigger when I first sculpted them, but it may have been toned down as I smoothed things out. Great catch! I'll definitely add it before I cast my master mold.
Thanks man! I'm always looking for ways to make my pieces better. And yeah I figured if I'm going to sculpt it, I might as well sculpt the whole head. Even though it will be covered by a hood most of the time.
But yeah once I get the cast out of fiberglass and resin, I'll smooth the crap out of it and detail it with the bigger eyebrows etc. Then re-mold it for the final castings. And who knows. Maybe when my 45 days is up I'll offer a prototype run of these as well as my Deadpool. We will see what I have time for.
Thanks all for comments and critiques so far! It helps me become a better artist for sure.

So what are the steps taken to create a mask like this? You sculpt clay over your cast or mannequin, then cast it in silicone and resin? How does one do that? I might need to sculpt a similar mask/helmet for a short film I'm writing. Are there threads to help beginners learn this process? Thanks! You have amazing results! It is really coming together. I agree with the comment about accenting the brow more to look more intimidating. Great job!
Yeah I sculpt a clay helmet over an armature of a head. And then I follow THIS loosely. I use 100% silicone caulking to make my molds. Then once I have the silicone jacket done I'll add keys and a mother mold over the top made of resin and fiberglass.
Once the mold is complete you just apply a mold release agent in the mold, and then fiberglass and resin the interior of the mold. Once dry pull it all apart and there you go!
And thanks! I'm really happy with how my stuff is turning out. It is incredibly uplifting to create something like this! And don't worry the eyebrows will become more mean >=)
But yeah seriously. Check stiltbeaststudios.com out. He does Halloween haunts but he has a TON of awesome material on his youtube channel. Also just google "Silicone Caulk Mold" And you will get a ton of hits how to do a cheap mold. Once I have the funds I'll probably buy smoothon or monsterfx products to cast with. But this is a cheaper way to do it. Let me know if you have any other questions!
In bump-date news. I am almost done with my silicone jacket. I just applied the second to last layer with cheesecloth. I have one more layer with cheesecloth to do and then it's time for keys and a mother! But that will all happen next week as I'm out of town. But keep firing questions! I'll answer all that I can.

And Smooth-cast 300. http://www.dickblick.com/products/smooth-on-smooth-cast-300/?clickTracking=true I use Smooth-cast for my helmets. Just plastic resin sloshed around in a silicon mold. I don't fiberglass. It would be stronger if you fiberglass it. Still the plastic is as strong as a plastic glass so as long as I don't throw it around it is all good.
Make sure you make a mother mold to hold the silicon molds shape. Otherwise the cast will be warped. My first helmet my mother mold was burlap and plaster of Paris. The burlap mother mold was still wet and I rushed it. So the mother mold split apart >.<!! Then my latex mold that took weeks to get thick enough was for nothing. Because the burlap was so wet it messed up the latex too. So I wasted a lot of money and time. That is why I use silicon for my molds. I am going to start using fiber glass for my mother molds. Just so they will last longer.

Well not much to bump-date. I didn't get the last silicone layer put down before I had to head to class. And I'm heading out of town right after so I don't have time to do anything. But I'm hoping to have the mold completely done by Wednesday of next week and pull a cast that night.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to create a dome of frosted plastic, then paint the interior to get a base color and install interior LED's to get it to light up. I'm still stumped on what to do for lighting my eyes. I'm trying to figure out how to get a full lens in there while still being able to see. I have a setup already..but it's so thick that if my mask is face hugging at all...giggity...it won't sit right.

Hey Cubone, loving the new build, the sculpt is shaping up nicely. I always thought Taskmaster had a cool design, but I never really got into him. For the eyes, maybe take a peek around some of the better known Iron man builds around here. They usually do the eyes with EL tape or similar things. This gives a nice glow, but does limit vision.
Thanks Neo. And yeah I have looked around at the Iron Man builds. I still haven't found something that will work exactly how I want to, so I'm trying to design something that will. But I'm having a hard time, and honestly...I'm kind of giving up on this stuff. Life is getting hectic, and It's hard to stay motivated to do things when I'm the only one in my area that does this. But I'll keep on trucking on it I guess.
I appreciate all the comments and critiques. I'll try to work this into something I can be proud of.

So you aren't going to see any raw pulls of the helmet?
I will AP. It just may take me longer to get it to that stage than I thought. I don't want to disappoint people that may want one. I feel more comfortable with my Taskmaster sculpt than my Deadpool anyways.
So yes. You will see pulls of the Taskmaster eventually. It just won't be like...next week or anything hah.
P.S I meant giving up...as in getting frustrated and feeling like I'm not getting anything back. I'm not quitting. I love this stuff way to much.

Alright. Well I have half of the mother mold done. So I'm hoping to finish it up tomorrow morning. Maybe if everything goes cool I can have a rough pull tomorrow night...but that's like asking for a miracle. I'd post up pictures of the mold etc...but everyone has seen a mold and it's quite boring hah.

Great to see someone tackling one of my favorite costumes! What you have so far looks excellent, looking forward to more progress.
