I am getting some things quoted for laser cutting and engraving and the engraver is requesting vector format images of my artworkd. What file format would that be (and can it be done) with adobe illustrator CS2 where I created the graphic?

EPS, Ai. or SVG are all vector file formats. Illustrator CS2 is specifically used for creating vector art.

In addition you can export as DXF-file,wmf should work as well iirc.

The AI-Files that you produce with Illustrator are a standard format that most programs can open, at least the older versions.

You may want to review your graphics for coherence, though, especially to check the fonts that you used ! To make sure that anything that uses a font will be exported correctly you should convert your letterings to curves, making them independend of any fonts used. Otherwise you might end up with a replacement font in your graphics, since your certainly special fonts are either not available on your laser cutter´s or have not been embedded into your file. You are always better off with fonts converted to curves !!!

Yup, just found it SVG. The laser cutter does not use .ai (or my version of it)

Thanks folks. :)

save it as an older ai file, as long as the corel version is new enough , it can open it, or , you can convert to a .CDR Just make sure of what version corel the laser cutter company is using older vorel can't open a new cdr so gotta make sure to save it to a compatable version..make sense? manfromnaboo is also correct in you better convert all fonts, lettering to curves or you may lose em in the final vector cut or raster, whichevr the case may be.

FYI, You have to save the AI file in version 8 or it can have import problems with Corel!!!!!

you can send me the file sulla, I can convert it almost every time.

by and large, when somebody is sending me a file I try the straight .ai file first and can get it converted to Corel Draw. If that doesn't work, then I start going with saving to earlier versions of .ai, like v9, or saving as a pdf, which works fine as well.

V14 of Corel will import files 99% of the time.

Corel can import Native AI version 8 files most of the time without problems.

After version 8, Adobe began saving with PDF data and Corel didn't handle it very well. Your results may vary but saving in AI 8 is the safest bet!!
