Cowboys and Aliens (not really a) Movie Review

Since when is not liking a movie or TV show (or whatever) being a "Hater".

Well, it's not; you're laboring under a misapprehension. Dissenting opinion is fine, of course; a well-reasoned counter-argument is even welcome as it invites discourse and spirited debate.

Where "hater" comes in is when folks just use smiley faces in the face of perceived "failure" as their sum-total content of observations, a written "nyah-nyah" in the face of positivity, or just the general inability to allow someone to enjoy something.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hater

When there's eighteen pages of definitions of "hater" in the Urban Dictionary that all sort of agree with each other, the usage is on to something.

"Liking" or "not liking" something has nothing to do with being a "hater." Qui-Gonzalez violently dislikes the work of Seth Rogen; whaddaya gonna do? It's just not for him; not a hater. Jeyl, for example, with her blinders-on view of movie narrative is a "hater" since she can't see the empowered women in C&A because of the flaws of Green Lantern. Get it?

No, if you don't like what I like and have ****ty grammar, syntax and punctuation and can only express yourself in smileys... then you might be a hater.

Larry, you do realize that we both liked this movie, right?

In my last post I meant that if people don't like what I like then they might be a hater. I meant this as a joke, and not directed towards you. Sometimes forum posts can be miscommunicated.

My apologies.

Now let's get back to talking about Cowboys & Aliens!

I'm really trying hard not to use a smiley here Larry...

Urban Dictionary: hater

When there's eighteen pages of definitions of "hater" in the Urban Dictionary that all sort of agree with each other, the usage is on to something.

Okay allow me to be more specific, the incredible misuse of the word "hater" is appalling. I realize that there are many people who jump into a discussion just to vent negative thoughts towards whatever subject they find distasteful without elaboration (and yes I am guilty of that as well) but you can't honestly say that the word "hater" is not overused and/or improperly used much of the time.

There are of course many a not so well-reasoned counter-argument in favor of a movie, TV show, etc. so shall we start calling the people who seem to enjoy everything "lovers" and argue that these people refuse to listen to a dissenting opinion? I for one do not find the excuse that "it's just a stupid summer movie so sit back and enjoy it" to be a well reasoned counter-argument but that is one I see here all the time. I have witnessed many discussions where a valid discussion is going on and "lovers" jump in to tell everyone to lighten up and just enjoy the movie. Hardly a compelling argument.

Smileys are fine; I use them all the time myself since non-verbal cues are lacking in writing, and not everyone is awesome as me at it, nor has an ability to parse my awesomeness.

(wait for it)

:lol

I wrote "...can only express themselves in smileys" which is of course a generalization of the type of post haters are most known for.

Well, I'm not exactly putting forth an argument. I wouldn't, for example, say the opposite number of a hater would be a "lover," what with that word already enjoying a rich lexicon in 1960s romance novels and present-day soap operas. I'd go with "fan" or "enthusiast," which of course delineates the difference. "Lighten up; it's just a movie," is a relaxed, enthusiast-type thing to say. "HARRISON FORD PHONED IN HIS PERFORMANCE!" "THE ALIENS AREN'T WEARING PANTS!" "THE COSTUMES SUCK!" is a more shrill commentary worthy of being labelled a hater.

I dunno, man; I can't say I care all that much. Haters gonna hate.

...and enthusiasts gotta enthuse.

Saw it at a matinee today for 5 bucks. It was worth about that. Average summer fare.

Were the Native Americans a nod to the Ewoks?

Regarding the dog:
When the dog goes to investigate the Aliens inside the overturned steamboat, he whimpers like he's being killed. Then he comes back, just fine. Did anyone else think the dog was either impregnated ala Alien3, or perhaps a "magical" alien like Olivia Wilde? Oh, and I too was waiting for the dog to go with Craig at the end. Also, it was hard to get behind Ford's motivations when his son was such a knob.

Right.

But in a post-1983 sci-fi film, you can't deny the plot similarities. Band of heroes have to mount an assault on the bad guys' metallic installation. En route, they are captured by the tribe of natives, their lives threatened. Until a pseudo-deity (in this case, Wilde instead of C-3PO) turns the tide and an alliance is formed.

I'm surprised Favreau didn't have an Apache warrior hugging Ford's leg as Adam Beach declares "Wonderful! We are now a part of the tribe!"

Oh, and did I mention Favreau likes Lucas?

Well, of course I don't deny it, in that it doesn't stop there. I said way back upthread that C&A shares its plot with fifty other Westerns since the beginning of film. It's a trope, man. And it was way before 1983, natch.

Landon! Join the expedition!

:lol

Went to see it this morning.

Brilliant !! Enjoyed every singly second of it :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Star Wars Chick totally missed this but for me the most epic scene in the film was:

When Harrison Ford butted Daniel Craig with his rifle and Craig in turn punched Ford in the face... and then they pause, stare at each other, and you just see the recognition of two bad-asses acknowledging one another for what they are, signifying they are equals, and that there will be no further need to test one another. Capturing that moment between Indiana Jones and James Bond just made me want to cheer.

Mine too ! That was priceless !

And here's a good reason why I never go into movie discussion threads before watching them, and avoid everything but the trailers.

I was VERY pleasantly surprised to see that as the movie progressed, it turns out Jake was not alien as I thought he would be. It was even greater to find out the girl was in fact the alien :lol. And her rising from the fire was the best way to find out :thumbsup

It's fun to imagine / presume things, and then find out something different once you watch it :)
