Cowboys and Aliens (not really a) Movie Review

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes $54M
2. The Smurfs $21M
3. Cowboys & Aliens $15.7M

:lol

Wow. Smurfs won. Those crazy sons of a #&!)# did it. Cowboys and Aliens... isn't looking too good.

It's still about the same when you realize 41 percent of Smurf's second weekend comes from 3D presentations, an advantage Cowboys & Aliens doesn't have. The two movies' respective ten-day tallies were $76.2 million and $67.4 million, much closer (considering the 3D bump) than deserves a laughing smiley.

I haven't seen the smurfs, but isn't it a kids movie? And tickets are half price? So that means it is king all vs cowboys and aliens.

No. Let's say it is a kid's movie; so for every kid (or so) there's at least one more ticket being sold to an adult who wouldn't be going otherwise. Then, I don't know how it works in Michigan, but in my city the 3D surcharge is anywhere between $2.50 and $5 a ticket, kid or not, which accounts for 41% of its second weekend, remember. Add another 41% to C&A, and it's 22.1m for the weekend.

But, honestly, unless we all run studios, weekend gross is a ridiculous way to judge the success of a film or not for the average joe, because not everyone has the same context. The only context we share is the film experience.

And C&A is automatically a better film than the Smurfs, for me, by virtue of the fact I went to see one and will not see the other. :lol

Where on earth did you get that idea? A movie's a movie around here, ticket price is the same for everything.

...cowboys & aliens offers nothing to films.
I think that's part of your problem. Not every film made has to somehow revolutionize filmmaking. A movie is a form of entertainment, nothing more. And I was entertained by C&A. Mission accomplished.

I agree by default that cowboys & aliens is a better movie than the smurfs Larry for the same reasons you mentioned.

I was in no way saying that the smurfs is a better film as I will never see it.

And Jedi2016 tickets here are half price for children and I don't like the film simply because it was not entertaining at all ( to me.) I couldn't escape reality while watching this movie. Not everyone feels the same, but that is how I feel. I just thought it would be better and was horribly let down by it's hollowness. I wasn't expecting the world, but I would had liked to have at least gotten something from the film other than a overwhelming sense of disappointment.

And no sir Art Andrews. I am not trolling it is just boggling my mind how anyone can think that this the best movie of the summer? And as a member I am just joining in on the discussion, however much my opinion is different than others.

Neither did Apes and look at how much better it performed than Cowboys and Aliens over it's opening weekend. 36 for cowboys and 54 for apes. Man, to think that there was another forum which speculated Apes to be the film that would bomb.

:wacko

I thought you were just capping on C&A? :lol You're not comparing an opening with a ten-day, are you?

And I'm not aware of anybody who thought APES was going to bomb as I don't associate with the unenlightened. All my pals couldn't wait for it.

I gave you the numbers for comparison. Apes made 54 million on it's opening weekend while Cowboys made 36 on it's opening weekend. What are you talking about when you bring up a "ten-day" comparison?

This fell right around the predicted numbers. C & A is expected to have a final box office tally of around 85 to 90 million or about half of its budget not adding in the marketing cost.

Was not that thrilled with this movie. The look was good (IMHO), the acting was good (IMHO) but I thought the writing was lame. To me as an adult, it seemed like it was geared towards teenagers. It did not require you to think, there were no surprises...a bit boring.

First of all, why is everyone so concerned with the alien's lack of pants? What aliens wear pants? ET? Queen? ALF? Ok Paul did, but that was because his human captors made him.

I thought the movie was a lot of fun. Decent paced with a straight forward plot. The dialog was good, effects were decent, Olivia was alway nice to watch. No, it's not a deep thinking movie, but it's no smurfs. There's no stupid childlike humour (Transformers), and no awkward/random villains (Green Lantern).

It's not perfect, yeah, it has issues and questions raised (no one was scared of the flying creatures?) but for a summer popcorn movie it fit the bill. Hell and I've never been one for Westerns.

And I'm sorry I bought the graphic novel.

I loved it when Harrison Ford totally went "mount and blade" on one of the aliens with a spear. Haha, it was alright but I agree that it wasn't a good movie.

+1

I can't believe all the haters of this film. I would think it'd be right up the average geek's alley.

I really don't understand how a movie like THOR gets all kinds of love and this gets bashed.

To each his own...:)

Since when is not liking a movie or TV show (or whatever) being a "Hater". I swear that is the most overused lame ass catch word used in the world today. There has always been dissenting opinion and always will be.

Friggin lovers.
