Costume Accuracy vs. Publics Views

Von Stauffenberg wasnt a Nazi, IIRC he never joined the party. I think (though I could be wrong) that only members of the party actually wore the swaztika. Ima have to research that.

I would think of it as this...Would you wear a KKK robe to a Con? It has a lot of the same conotations to a lot of people. IMO

I say where the entire suit, as long as your with me and you have handcuffs on, no ones going to say a word :rolleyes

I am not one that particulary enjoys cultural sensitivity. I am no racist however a symbol as aforementioned by others is given power by peoples view on it.
I heard of someone in a tusken female costume and there was a slight uproar over her being an extremist muslim and how dare she wear those vestments at such a time and place (it was a star wars promotion at a store where she was accompanied by other star wars clad people.
Wear the swastika in all of its glory for accuracy sake not support, if someone doesnt like it tell its part of the costume and cast your eyes elsewhere, i wear my sigil of baphomet all the time and ive been chastised by randoms about being the devil (i merely laugh at this esp when they say they can save me)
And the prince harry thing caused a stir cos he IS a prince constantly in the media spotlight, when you're that famous everything is criticised.

WEAR IT!

Here is my take on wearing a swastika even if it is for a movie costume. I airsoft, and I wear alot of tactical gear and camoflauge, sometimes I even try to replicate a certain group, however, I would not ever wear any patches or symbols, if you have not earned them. Even if they are your grandfathers swastikas he kept since that time. To me, if I was in the military and I see somebody wearing a unit patch or a rank, I would be offended seeing as he has not earned that. Now, here is the grey area, since it is just a costume, it would be fine to wear it. After all, it is just a costume right? I mean, you really didn't kill 6 million Jews did you? The reason why I say this is a grey area is that if you are just replicating a nazi uniform then, IMO people at con's or halloween are still going to like it, even without the swastikas on them. If it is Tom Cruise's character in the movie, the knock yourself out with swastika's.

And before anybody here thinks that I am ignorant for saying wear them, I'll have you know that I know alot about world war II and the world back around that time period. I know alot about many genocides, I have studied these things so I can have the knowledge today. I do not support the Nazi party, nor am I saying this to purposely offend Jewish people. It's just a costume.

Edit- Also, like someone before me said, dont sugar coat your costume if it is a movie or game replication. You either make it or you dont. You arent trying to feed anyone with that symbol of hate, but rather making an accurate costume.

I am strongly against it, period. That's like going to a con, dressed as a ku-klux-klansman. Simply put, it's a uniform that represents hateful, murderous, thugs. Why not dress like one of the "Band of Brothers" or just represent the WWII American soldier, by sporting their costume? You would get better reactions, that's for sure.

i would go for it. The Swastikas are part of it.. if you are going to do it go all the way . the reaction is part of the costume.. if someone has a problem with it they should bring it to your attention and you can tell them that you are a costume artist and this costume very very accurate..

Really you're asking the wrong question what you should be asking is it ok to wear a Nazi costume.
Swastika or not a Nazi uniform is still a Nazi uniform it doesn't become something else just because you take an emblem off it.
Is it ok ? well everyones gonna have a different view, personally i have no issue with it in the context of it's use in this case.

Me personally, I wouldn't wear it. Not because of costuming concerns. I am sure at a con, in perspective, people would understand and not have as much of an issue. My concern would be photographs surfacing later and people who would see the pictures out-of-context. How would you like to be turned down a job 10 years from now because you forgot to take some con pics out of your myspace and a potential employer saw it? Stranger things have happened.

Cos the character he wants to costume as is a Nazi in the movie ?
He can't really turn up in a US army rig and wander around saying to everyone "I'm Tom Cruise from Valkyrie I know i should be wearing WWII German uniform but this one gets a better reception"

What? That doesn't make any sense.

But the same goes for any bad guy costume (albeit fictional). One "shouldn't" wear stormtrooper armor, then.

But I'm still kinda with ya--I've suggested more than once to my fellow 501st guys that mixing US patriotism with Imperial costuming (like carrying the US flag or painting a US flag on your "bad guy" armor) is a bad idea, but it seems no one else is ever bothered by the practices.

The poster is playing a specific historical/film character, not looking to play some kind of soldier. He has the costume already and is asking specific questions about its showing.
What kind of soldier he SHOULD play is not on the table.

He never mentioned that in his original post.
