Cosplay at Star Wars Disney?

I don't think they should. You can wear Harry Potter costumes at Universal can you not?

Yes you can, for now. You can't go in wearing a Shrek or Transformer costume. Also, you can't go in any emergency services costume or anything else that Universal Studios deems inappropriate, offensive, dangerous, etc.
I went there in November and the stench from some of the costumed robed people was offensive. I could imagine what it would be like in July. In addition to having being checked for metal when you go into the park, they should get an electronic bacteria sniffing wand and prevent people with poor hygiene from entering the park.

I think the difference at Disney is that only cast members are dressed up. If you go to a RenFair is is assumed that people dressed up are probably visitors or volunteers.
It would be cool if they had "a day" that people could come in costume or an after hours event.

Disney Releases Guidelines on Proper Attire Within Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Park
June 10, 2019
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has been open for over a week now and with it has come some confusion regarding proper attire within the land, given that they have repeatedly stated that while robes and such are sold within the land, they are not permitted to be worn by travelers older than 14. To help clarify, they’ve just released the following images to help travelers decipher what can and cannot be worn within the land:

While costumes may not be worn by guests 14 years of age or older, appropriate bounding—dressing in outfits inspired by Star Wars—is permitted. The following guidelines will help you arrive to Batuu in style. Proper footwear must be worn.

Permitted attire includes:

  • Bounding: piecing together traditional clothing items that when worn together, serve as a recognizable tribute to Star Wars characters
  • Batuuan attire: wearing outfits inspired by the villagers of Batuu—muted tones, vests, layers, etc.
Not permitted attire includes:

  • All robes or military-style attire
  • Masks, face paint, elaborate headwear, blasters or holsters (lightsabers are allowed) or hard items such as body armor, helmets or kneepads
  • Full character suits
Please note some of the items sold in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, like robes, cannot be worn inside the land.

I know it’s hard to police but I really feel like “full costume” should be the cutoff for adults. Like you can wear the tunic and obi part of a Jedi get-up but not boots and robe over top, or you can wear the long robe but over your normal clothes.

I don’t know, it’s a slippery slope and I’ve griped about it before, I am just irked by all these items being for sale IN the land and not wearable. I completely understand Disney trying to protect themselves though, I just wish the items were omitted in adult sizes altogether if they can’t be worn.

I know personally I can’t help myself and will be dressing in the approved “Batuu-esque” attire out of respect for their policies, I just won’t also be buying any other costume pieces

Well it's actually easy to police. That type of thing is checked at security when you enter the parks. But the mix costume you mentioned is what Disney is saying is ok as long as long as certain items are not included. The Jedi Robes I believe are forbidden for safety reasons. The probably don't want people tripping on them in the crowds or getting caught in rides, doors, etc...

That's like saying they shouldn't sell golf balls with mickey on them because you can play golf in the park. Or you can't buy kitchen/baking/BBQ items because you can't cook in the park. Or you can't buy gifts for your pets because you can't have your pets in the park.

Most people buy gifts and merchandise to take home and have to use later and/or put in a collection. The offerings they have at the park are going make a lot of fans and collectors happy to own. If you want something to wear in the park while you are there, get some Mickey Ears.

I appreciate your input MJF, and I know I’m coming across as a crusader against this policy and don’t really mean to. I think Disney is obviously within their power to do whatever they would like in their parks and will be respecting that and enjoying SWGE as they approve.

I'm looking at the example pictures Disney showed in their guideline and trying to line that up with the wording. Because I'm seeing a Rey cosplay, and some Jedi without the outer robes (which Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Luke were often enough). That seems to clash with their "no recognizably Star Wars character" blah blah blah. I can't help but feel someon's get-u[ might make it in without comment one day and be dinged another, depending on the opinion of the person making the call... phase of the moon... sunspot activity...

Because they are costumes mixed with noticeable regular clothing.

The girl on the left is Ahch-To Rey top to bottom -- just no backpack, staff, or blaster. The guy in the third pic is wearing an ill-fitting Rubies adult Obi-Wan costume -- complete with shoe covers -- minus the outer robe, per park rules. I'll grant the woman he's with and the guy in the last pic are more obviously "inspired by" but not recreating a specific character with slavish accuracy. But those two I call out are exactly those characters -- full costumes, minus accessories. Not an assemblage of "Star Wars ish" clothing.

It's a combo of items they sell in the shop and their own clothing. No one is going to walk into GE and think that they are actually portraying a character. The components also comply to park guidelines such as no armor, helmets, masks or robes. And no one I see in the photo is wearing boot covers.

I definitely think the girl in the Rey outfit could be confusing to a child, probably not the best example for them to give. The styling of the others are pretty clearly fans and there aren’t any Jedi characters as far as I have seen within the cast members on Batuu so they’re a little safer. It’s actually funny that the more “generic Star Wars” elements like vests over long sleeve shirts seem to be the hardest to pull off without ending up too close to cast members.

I do agree that it’s going to fall heavily on the discretion of individual cast members for approving costumes on a day to day basis.

Funny I stumbled across this conversation just now, because I spent part of the morning walking around Galaxy's Edge!

As somebody who has worked at Disneyland for 30 years I can say that it's pointless to speculate on the why of Disneyland rules. Unless you were present at the meeting at which the decision was made you can't know. Yes there will be a PC press release stating reasons, but realise that the statements crafted for public consumption don't necessarily have much to do with the things discussed at the meeting.

I'm surprised at how liberal those GE Guest costume rules are!

But then again, adult Guests come in costume every day. There are the Disney Bound people whose clothing cleverly suggests Disney characters, those who dress in the costumes of characters who pretty much wear ordinary clothes (like Indiana Jones) and everything in between. There are those who test the limits of what they can get away with, and walk around in the Park with very costume-y outfits.

BTW the costumes worn by the ordinary GE Cast Members are pretty strange-looking and I don't think they would be mistaken for what Star Wars cosplayers would wear. Of course Disneyland wouldn't want competing Reys, Stormtoopers, and Chewbaccas running around.
