Unlimited Run Cosmo Dragoon (3D Printed Kit)

Re: 3D Printed Kit - Cosmo Dragoon - New Pics post #42

You guys awesome!!!!! Thanks again for doing this! The kit bash of mine that I posted earlier was my first foray into prop making. This gun is what got me into the hobby so you can see why I am so enthusiastic about it. I really look forward to seeing the finished product. For my part, if the oval notches and small hole in the conical part of the cylinder matched up I would be completely happy You guys keep up the great work!

Re: 3D Printed Kit - Cosmo Dragoon - New Pics post #42

Matt009 pointed some good details.

Here is what I can add:
I bought blackpowder guns to make comparations:

-1848 dragoon, first or second issue
what is right:
-square trigger guard
-shape of cylinder notches
-cylinder lenght, close to barrel base lenght
what is wrong:
-barrel lengh
-the frame height, too weak
-the shape of the barrel entry, no way to make a accurate design
-the cylinder is too short compared to the frame, near a 1cm gap.
-the lever is totally wrong, from beginning to end

-1847 colt walker

what is wrong:
-barrel entry lenght, 8cm long instead of 6, so, longer than the cylinder
-lever end and attachment, in fact the cosmodragoon design has a colt walker lever base and a 1851 navy lever end and similar to colt navy attachment
-handle top, not a straight assembly, but rounded shape
what is right:
-lenght and shape of cylinder,
-shape of the frame
-lenght of the barrel
-shape of the barrel base
-all correct details on dragoon too
once shortened, it's also possible to redrill it for a good lever axle position, and shape, to match the cosmodragoon, once modified the handle has a correct look and shape, I think the barrel defects will disappear once I will modify it on the lathe.
- the gap between barrel and cylinder-frame was also quite easy to modifiy, keeping most of accurate details between we can see on "real" cosmodragoon.

You can see on the VICE gun they filled the gap between barrel and cylinder creating a wrong assembly design.

a16.png
you can also have a quick comparition with the taito gun.

Here you can see a larger picture of the best available screenshot:

a17.png

you can see the frame height, and how the barrel and frame-cylinder meet together, making a straight line.
you can also see the lever base (walker) lever end (1851 navy), barrel lenght, barrel base shape,, the cylinder and barrel base have quite similar lenght, but depending on pictures, the barrel base is sometimes longer, depending on pictures, I would choose a cylinder lenght between 5 and 6 cm.
The barrel maximum diameter is about ⅓ of the cylinder, and it's easy to see the "cap n ball" technology replicated on the picture.
Once you have seen this picture, it's easy to virtually just add the conical end to the real walker barrel, adding 3 cm on barrel and 4 cm with the additionnal part on handle, and you get a 46cm cosmodragoon.
The walker is 39cm long, the dragoon is about 33 cm long if my memory is correct.

Here is my actual work, first view is virtual modification:

a19.png

Quite "easy" to do, except soldering on frame.

here is my actual work:

a27.png

You can see the guard trigger is not accurate on matsumoto's design, as the cylinder notches position

What I qee as wrong on your design:

-the 2 bolts on bottom are too big.
About the cosmodragoon, there is actually no view of the bolts, each view I have seen doesn't show the bolt heads, so, no way to know on which side they are, so I assume your design is correct, as mine, as the real colt design is, as it is on each existing replica.
-the lever base shape is not correct compared to the best available screenshot.
-the diameter ration between barrel and cylinder is closer to ½ I think the cylinder is too weak.
-the ratio between barrel end and central piece is not correct the central piece is too narrow
-the barrel base is not correct, sections are not rounded and the bevel is missing
-the "cap'nball" are missing on the cylinder, and the design is wrong

I especially like your skull and bones emblem, very nice design

Re: 3D Printed Kit - Cosmo Dragoon - New Pics post #42

takes a breath.....

"I'm sure this gun will be the interpretation that the majority of interested people will be more than satisfied with."

"a physical interpretation of a fictitious weapon, so some sacrifices have to be made make the gun function properly"

"I would suggest waiting for a prototype of the physical gun to be printed; a 3d model image is only as good as the person who made the render, and that's me. And I suck at rendering."

Hopefully the final product weighs out well for you guys, we'll do what we can! :)

Re: 3D Printed Kit - Cosmo Dragoon - New Pics post #42

I've got 3 printers dedicated to getting the 1st prototype done. We appreciate the feedback, but in the end we won't be able to make every person completely happy, but we'll try to make it as accurate as can be.

Q - How are the parts going to be broken down? I am going to want to do some modification myself. Here are 2 ways hat I have seen it done:

They're cutup to fit the printers best, but they make sense and should allow some customization. You'll see the pics of the parts soon

Q - Will the handles be solid or will I be able to replace the “wood” grips with actual wood grips?

Yes, the grips are completely replaceable

Q - Mazone Detector attachment should definitely be made (please I beg you!!). That would seal the deal on this being the ultimate version of the gun.

I don't know what this is, give me some more info

In the end, this will be the best Cosmo Dragoon available for the price range we're aiming for. Should have some pics by the weekend

It's alive!!

So I've had 3 printers going for a couple days to get here. This is still draft quality and it's missing parts, but it's fricking cool! This is a BIG gun.

Re: 3D Printed Kit - Cosmo Dragoon - 1st print post #65

I'm a fan of the big size. But I'm not the one that can currently hold it in my hand. When you hold it, does it still seem "real" ?

Ya, it seems good, and I don't have big hands. I'll show some pics once I get all the pieces done and glued together

Looks VERY Nice !!!

One comment is the back piece really tight/snug to the side of the hand when the gun is held??? The picture gives me that impression.

Re: 3D Printed Kit - Cosmo Dragoon - 1st print post #65

So here we have it, finally got it all printed, assembled and glued together. Everything fits really well. The trigger moves, the cylinder cover opens, the cylinder rotates (or doesn't with a touch of glue). What you see here is 99% final. I'll look at making 2 of the small changes that @matt09 mentioned, but aside from that, this will be the final. I likely won't reprint another version just for those 2 small changes. Look for this to go on sale mid-late next week, once my supplies come in. This is the biggest gun I've ever done, but I'll keep the price at $150 as I mentioned in the 1st post.

What you see in the pics below are completely untouched, no sanding. Just a few supports picked off and it all glued together:

Excellent work !! Can't wait to have it on my wall.

Re: 3D Printed Kit - Cosmo Dragoon - 1st print post #65

Ok fellas, got a few corrections on myself to make. I watched some Harlock and G E and got with my buddy Matt (who has a crazy photographic memory) at http://www.cornponeflicks.org/harlock/harlockmain.html. We chatted up a bit and I would like to apologize for the bad info from earlier:

1) The “hammer” does get ****** around 4 times at least (this is in 5 OAV’s, 4 movies and over 150 episodes of anime). Sorry darkev2, my bad.:( I don’t recall Harlock ever doing it but Tetsuro does a couple of times, Tadashi does and so does Tochiro (in Endless Odyssey where the hammer very obviously “falls” while firing the anti-Noo bullet). It might happen in the Queen Emeraldas OAV but I can’t recall and don’t feel like sifting through it.

2) The cylinder is never seen to spin however you hear mechanical noises as Tochiro is loading the anti-Noo bullet and preparing to fire the Dragoon. Then when he lifts the gun you don’t see and sign of the bullet so it is safe to assume that he “chambered” the round.

3) As to charging the Dragoon, Tetsuro from Galaxy Express has a brief case (who’s interior resembles a French Fit pistol case) that he keeps his 999 Pass and the Dragoon in (along with some other skull embossed flask). Also in that case is an embossed flask (resembling the type that used to hold powder for old percussion guns). This could very easily be construed as a means to charge the gun especially given that Tetsuro didn’t have the resources available to him that the other carriers of the dragoons did (he got his from Tochiro’s mom so the same theory applies). Other Dragoon owners: Harlock, Emeraldas, Hiroshi, and Maeter. Anyway, we never do see the weapon get charged but it is possible that this is the means to do so (at least a portable one).

After extensive data mining of Japanese sites I have been unable to find any garage kit or production model of the Dragoon that has either the Anti-Noo bullet or the Mazone detector. Almost every version is too small (with the exception of the Mandrake and Tanaka versions and these are incredibly expensive). Also, the hammer cocks on none of them and many don’t have a rotating cylinder as best I can tell.

As to accuracy, I feel that the overall size is the most important here. Get the overall size correct and hit all the “landmarks” and you will have a great reproduction. I have looked at many different frames of the dragoon and I gotta tell ya the animators went “off character” a number of times with the gun. You just have to remember that this is an animated gun and not something that we can reference in real life like a hero prop. Even Matsumoto draws the thing differently (especially as to which side the “loading port” or whatever it is call is on). I could post several here but why take up the space.

All in all, I thank you gentlemen. Your version is fantastic and for the price beats all challengers. Thank you again for doing this. I hope that Parfaitelumiere tells all his French buddies about this and the buy one from you. Look forward to sending you my money.

The above are pics and reference material of the dragoon in it's case. The one with all the extra stuff is from a really obsessive fan who got a bunch of different GE props to go in the case (I have a list if anyone is interested). The silver cased gun is a Tanaka and the other is a Taito I believe (based on a shot of the guy holding it and the grip being way to small).

Re: 3D Printed Kit - Cosmo Dragoon - 1st print post #65

Here is the Mazone detector from the original series. It slides onto the top of the dragoon from the back.

I thank my friend Matt with the crazy memory for these pics. Anyway, put this bad boy with the Dragoon and the Anti-Noo bullet and you have the ultimate dragoon prop. Who knows, maybe you can do a separate run for accessories. :)

The print looks fantastic - I'm really looking forward to this!

Looks like I'm going to have to make at least the bottom half of a case, too (for wall display).

Would you get larger pics or maybe a reference of the episode?
I already have a original civil war era flask, looks like a third variation colt 1851 navy to 60's era colts revolver flask.
I already shared the run to french collectors, I will post the link on the forum too, even I personally won't get one, prefer to work on my steel version.
