Cosima From Orphan Black

So my girlfriend and I are going to be cosplaying as Cosima [me] and Delphine [her] from Orphan Black to SDCC this summer.

We are going with their season 2 DYAD look, so lab-coats and ID badges, the works. I re-created their DYAD work badges [well my interpretation of them since I can only make out so much of the text on them]. I printed them out, glued them to a thin cardboard stock, and then laminated them. I'm actually really proud of the way they look, and how they turned out.

I have 2 Dickies brand lab-coats, and plan on getting the DYAD logo embroidered onto them [or if anyone knows of an online place that will make small purchase orders of custom patches? that would be awesome].

I have most of the little details; her nose ring, shell tattoo [I found a very close temp tattoo from this etsy shop] and glasses of course [which I already wear].

So it's all coming together nicely I think, please let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Probably my favourite clone, and nearly my favourite couple on the show... It's hard to choose between the Helium-huffing, stoner, "J'taime" scene, and Alison and Donnie bonding over unintended homicide.
Looking forward to how you tackle the dreads.

Haha you and me both!! I'll need to do some test hair-styles.

According to the hair and makeup guy, the wig uses an old stage trick of layering hair over wire to get the thickness without making it heavy.

Aha, I found the quote: "Cosima's wig is tiny. I use an old theater technique where we build a cage with wire and crepe hair and sew appliances to it. Although it looks substantial, less is more, and it's about the movement of the hair"

Hmm very interesting...thanks for that! I've seen a few tutorials on youtube, so we'll see how it works out :)

Finally got the lab coats embroidered, and they turned out AMAZINGLY!! I found a local custom embroidery shop, only cost me $10 a coat! A steal in my opinion; and the guy who did them was beyond nice and helpful. I'm so excited to show them off at Con in a few weeks!

This is probably one of my favourite shows on the moment and what a fab idea for a costume couple.

Looking good so far, can't wait to see the finished costumes. I love Orphan Black and after Sarah Cosima is my favorite clone.

You can buy dreadlock extensions at beauty supply stores, or I once commissioned a beautiful set of black/purple/silver dreadlock extensions for myself (it was very reasonable, about $60 for a set of double ended dreads that covered my whole head and then some extra) from a commissioner on this forum: Hair Extensions Forum ? Index page
You can find tutorials on making your own, and braiding them in. Just takes forever to braid them and you need help on the back.
Here's a pic of me wearing my dreads. It starts off humongously poofy and takes a day or two to relax if you go this route.

I guess you could also get yourself a wig and braid the extensions into the wig instead of on your head.

Those look great!!

I was actually thinking about buying dreadlock extensions but forgot about looking into it, so thank you for the reminder! I just finally realized that, logically, while my hair is long it still wouldn't look real or natural if I did some sort of twist/braid thing. I did find these great dreadlock ponytail extensions that I think will work perfectly, and are only like $25 + shipping.

That would totally work. Just twist your own hair in sort of cornrow style back into the ponytail and pop that on top.

I'm also doing a Cosima cosplay- I just got my nose ring. I'm interested in knowing what kind of nose ring you got. This is the one I ordered. https://www.etsy.com/listing/93325925/skinny-nose-ring-yellow-or-rose-14k?ref=shop_home_active_1 I'll be wearing it at DashCon next weekend. Would you ever be interested in sharing your DYAD badge design? I've tried making my own but it turned out terrible. Anyway, everything you've done looks great. Thanks for sharing!

I bought two retractable/clip-on sterling nose rings off eBay. They work very well, but take a few to get used to [for me at least]. As for the badges, I do plan on sharing the design, but it's going to have to be after Comic Con [so in August some time].

Just wondering, what font did you use for the ID tags, trying to create some for my sis but cannot for the life of me find a suitable font?

I used a typeface called 'Elemental' as a base font, and manipulated it to fit the original logo design. I will also be posting a blank [or I can custom fill-in] the Cosima DYAD badge in August.

thanks very much, got it finished and she is delighted :)DYAD ID Badge.jpg

hope you don't mind, I used yours as an example of the badge

I realize I'm pretty late on this, but I'm hoping you might still be around. Do you mind telling me what embroidery shop you went to for your coat? I'm working on my Cosima costume for SDCC, but all the shops I've called are going to charge a ~$30 setup fee for the logo plus the cost of the embroidery itself. Seems steep. I'm also in California, so I'm hoping the shop you went to might be accessible for me as well. Thanks! :)
