Correct Colour for Mal's Pistol?

Hey all,

As I'm planning on acquiring a solid-resin casting in the near future, I had a quick question regarding the correct colour scheme for Mal's pistol. The series version, not the film version.

I've seen numerous pics of different finished replicas, some with more of a faux brass finish to the main body and faux carbon weathering, and others with more of a darker metal finish and worn brass weathering along the edges.

Not having the series on DVD to refer to, and not really having found any pics online other than the replicas other have built, I'm unsure as to which is indicative of the screen-used piece used throughout the series.

What would be more series-accurate? I know the QMX stunt replica (based on the film version) sports the brass/carbon weathering finish, but was it also the same for the series version?

Any advice would be helpful, and appreciated.

I believe Mals pistol started off in the series as being very dark with the patina they added and got brighter throughout shooting as that coating was worn off from Nathan practicing his quickdraw!

Just what I've heard.

Thanks for the info! Hopefully others will chime in to verify that, but for now I'll assume I should go with the darker finish for the series version of the pistol.

Quick question, though. What's a "patina"? You'll have to forgive my ignorance, as most of the props I've ever built were Phasers and Tricorders, and so were an even colour that never required weathering, lol.

As such, I'm not familiar with any colouring/weathering techniques used for a screen-used prop of this type.

Patina is the oxidation that occurs on certain types of metal (brass, bronze, copper). In this instance, the darker color on Mal's piece. The lighter places are where the patina has been worn off, exposing the bare metal.

Ah, okay. Thanks for clarifying that. Now, how would I apply such a colouring/weathering technique to a resin casting? Like I said before, I'm not familiar with the finishing techniques used for a screen-used prop of this type.

there are a few good, recent threads kicking around here about mal's pistol... they should come up pretty readily. i seem to remember that robstyle posted a side by side of an original and a replica, and talked about what he did.
