[COMPLETE] The Amazing Spider-Girl (Female Ben Reilly Custom Dye-Sub Suit)

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

Hey Guys!

Alright, so I was able to buckle down today and pretty much finish this thing up. At this point I'm looking for thoughts / criticism on what you guys think needs to be fixed / changed. Let me know if you guys want to see some zoomed in areas in high res. I'm a bit close to the project and could use some fresh eyes to comb it over :wacko

I'm really excited about this! Please don't hesitate to be brutally honest with your critique :$

Honestly great job! I can't wait to see this printed and sewn!!! It looks professional. Also, make sure the muscle base and the design match up precisely and is mirrored precisely, can't tell in the pics if it is or not, but making it symmetrical was a pain in the butt for me.

Thanks! The muscle base I bought from Sonjou, so I really didn't do much to that. I made the belly button and the neck muscles look a little less prominent but that's it really. It looked pretty semetric before I started doing anything though!

Love this! I wish I could be more helpful with feedback, but I've never worked up a design myself. Just wanted to pop in to say it looks great. :)

Thank you!!! :)

This is perfect. I love the black gradient you've used on the blue parts. Especially around the belt area. It makes the legs of the spider logo blend into the blue sections which is how it was drawn in the comics. I hope I make sense. I've never seen anyone do that before on a Ben Reilly pattern.
Really nice job. You should do a male version too. I'm sure you'd have a lot of interest.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, that was my goal: trying to keep true to the comic look with a real world modern twist.

As for a male version, I do not think it would take too long to convert this over. Problem is I would probably need to buy a male muscle base which I really don't have the budget for just now. Perhaps if enough interest was generated I might spring for it, however I might then be inclined to ask a fair price in return for the completed dye-sub file(s) for the purchaser to use in their cosplay project. It would greatly help maintain my own project fund :$

However, this would only happen once I complete my own suit from the file I've been working on, mainly for quality assurance reasons (particularly how true the colors transfer from monitor to fabric), and also when my forum status has been upgraded to the point where I'm actually allowed to offer things for sale :cool. Also, I'm not even sure if selling the female and male versions would be technically allowed since I did not create the muscle base myself (I bought the female muscle base from Sonjou on his website 4 Neo Designs).

Thoughts anyone?

I was wondering if you gave any thought to having the blue parts be in metallic royal blue lycra? (would be a pain in the *** to do) But that would be closest to the comic look and not to mention that heroines look hot in tight metallic colors. (at least to me they do)

Haha I thought about some fabrics that I could piece together in a sewing project (I actually got some samples that a played around with), but ultimately decided to abandon that route and go for a fully dye sublimated piece, which would pre-print all of the details shown in the screenshots onto the fabric.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

So I was looking for a budget friendly alternative for a face shell to use under the mask, and I saw that some people had modded things like this:

The main issue seemed to be that it was too small being as they are for kids, but being as how I seem to have a relatively small head this could work. I also like the idea of using magnets to mount the eyes to the shell for numerous reasons, including greater wash ability without ruining the lenses and the fact that if I don't want to fully take off my mask to see something better, I can just pop off an eye haha

Anyone have experiences good or bad trying to use a this as a face shell?

I have a quick question on how you modified the muscle base design... How the hell did you do it? :p Buy the base, create layers and color those? How do you know/check that the lines are going to match up on the printed pattern?

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

Just got my test print Friday and waiting for a quote on my print. I am not sure how your file is scaled but you may end up using less yardage if you are on the shorter side.

Great pattern ! I purchased a muscle pattern half way through my pattern design. Can not wait to see this sewn up and ready to go !

That's pretty much it in a nutshell! The way I mapped out where everything should line up was by printing a mini paper copy of the base on regular sized paper (8.5" by 11"), cut out the pieces, and then tape them together the way it would be sewn. Once I had that done, I went to town with some colored pencils and markers to draw the design in a sort of three dimensional environment. After all the details were drawn, I flattened everything out again and used the paper model as reference when blocking out the colors in Photoshop.

Not sure if its the most precise way to do things and I won't really know how it turns out until I see the dye-sub fabric in person, but I'm hoping its pretty close! This is my first time attempting to make a dye-sub pattern.

Yes, I'm probably shorter than most guys. I'm 5'6" :) Keep me posted! I would really appreciate it!

Thank you! I'm excited as well. Most likely will put a quote in to FabricOnDemand.com at the end of February. A friend of mine was going to do a suit as well and we wanted to do both of our projects together.

That's great. I'm aiming to send mine in around the same time now I just need it sewn. Trying to find a budget friendly seamstress in NYC. Are you getting it sewn or doing that yourself ?

FRACKIN' GENIUS! I hadn't even thought of that. Going to work on mine now! <3 :D

Can't wait to see your finished product. Everything looks great so far!

I was going to sew it myself. I have some experience with a machine, and did a first run of a custom superman suit for a friend back in august (its on my blog linked below in my signature), but I'm by no means a professional seamstress. I'm just sort of learning as I go ;)

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

Hey Guys,

Just a quick update for you all. I just ordered two 8" x 8" samples from FabricOnDemand.com yesterday. One is of the spider emblem on the front with the surrounding red areas, the other is of the dark toning on the bicep / triceps area. I should be receiving these in 7-10 business days! Can't wait to check out how the colors look.

Once I review the samples, I'll make any adjustments that may be needed and then order the full pattern. I was able to squeeze everything into only two yards of fabric instead of the three that most people end up needing for one of these suits, so that will save me a little bit of money :) I'll post pics here when I receive the samples.

I'm probably going to sit down with a buddy of mine tomorrow for some more cosplay planning (a bunch of us are planning on going to Otakon this summer, it would be my first time), including the discussing of what I should do for the web-shooters. Not sure if I should go for the comic book look of the silver bracers on the outside or adapt the new TASM style.

Any thoughts?

tasm style would look cool in my eyes but if you want to keep it true to the comic the little nozzle is the way to go and as far as price my tasm2 print was 159.60 shipped for a 5'9-6' suit so hope that helps
