Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

looking great. I love silicone masks, they feel great, look real, and never rot.

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

Would a turkey baster fit your needs? Those are usually 6 oz or larger.

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

I've googled a LOT and the biggest I could find that uses the traditional plunger design was 4 oz. There are a couple at amazon.

Then I tried checking a few vet supply places and I found this monster: 400cc syringe. It holds over 13 oz. I can't seem to find anything in the > 4oz and < 13 oz range. You can try googling "400cc syringe" and you might find cheaper than the one I linked to.

Hope that helps!

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

Wow, I wish I had seen that you were starting on the mold sooner... You went for the plasti-paste directly onto the clay without using shell shock first? If you look at my Ahsoka headpiece thread, those are the same materials I used and the guys from Smooth On told me to use Shell Shock before the Plasti Paste. The Plasti Paste was my outer mold to keep it secure since the Shell Shock can be brittle. The point being that the Shell Shock gets into all the little details while the Plasti Paste is very fiberous and you'd have a hard time doing that. Did you have a hard time getting it on there? I hope you get the details you're looking for!

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

Ive made a lot of ssilicone masks, best release is 3 parts dishwashing soap to 3 or 4 parts alcohol scrub it in let it dry then do another coat. when the silicone is cured dump the whole thing in a bath of water for half an hour. this reactivates the soap and releases the silicone. for injecting go to a large d.i.y. store and get a drainblaster, meant for unblocking drains but is just a large syringe that will hold around a kilo of silicone. also one thing i noticed is you didnt make a clay deviding wall to seperate the sections. i find a 3 part mould works best for masks 1st section just forward of the ears then the rear section split into 2 down the back of the head. makes removal so much easier. the deviding wall is a realy good idea also as it allows the creation of a flange that can be drilled and bolted holding the mould. when you inject you are putting pressure in the mould and the plastic can flex a little and open up the seams. also when injecting i would reccomend using a pour tube fixed inside the hollow positive with bondo take this above the shoulder level. if there is silicone left in the tube above this level you know you are getting constant downward pressure. oh yea and dont forget a few bleed holes drilled where air could get trapped. you need to extend the bleed holes a few mm also to stop any air being pulled back into the mould. we use a worm of milliput cut into sections with a 1 mm hole drilled through the glued to the mould with a little bondo using a piece of wire to locate the hole through the mould.

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

@Webchief: Wow!! Failure!! I thought shell shock was the same as plasti-paste, I still don't know why. Anyway I'm sure that it'll pick up all the detail because I did a very thin coat and it applied easy.

@Piehead: Thanks for the tips, don't worry I've got a dividing wall(kinda forgot to put it on before the first coat and then took it off before I took the last pic). As for the release I've heard thats the best way to go, but what should I use for the release to seperate the plasti-paste from the other part of plasti-paste? Paste wax maybe? And how do I use a pour tube? Please post pics.

BTW thanks everyone for all the help.

Sorry for the DP but do you think a syringe could be made from a PVC pipe? Or somthing like clear acrylic tubing?

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

i'll get some pics up tonight so you can see what im talking bout mate.

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

Obviously it's too late because you've already stuck the two halves together but you can definitely use the wax as the release agent between them. That's what I did for Ahsoka and it worked fine. Just be extremely careful when you're wedging the two halves apart so that you don't crack the mold. Its not going to give right away because there will basically be a vacuum seal.

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

Ya I used the wax, and barely tried to see if it would come apart a little and it started to so I put it back on. Now I know that I used enough wax.

Re: Clone Wars Weequay pirate mask!!

There are some good sized 'food injector' syringes for cooking, but not sure how fine you need the tip to be. But seems i'm a tad late...
