Is it just me, or does anyone else remember so many dad's doing so many sweet costumes for the kids at the same time? Great work guys!
TK409 had a thread years ago doing a stormtrooper out of this craft foam. You guys might be able to pick up some tips & tricks from it, or learn from his experience.
Thanks everyone. It's always great to have Halloween to get back to costuming.
I started to paint and weather it yesterday, but the blue is off a bit (looks good in photo, not good enough in person) and I need more grime on the helmet for sure.
Way to go!!! I love what you have done. You've inspired to go the craft foam route for my 4 year old son. I had seen some actual abs plastic stormies on the bay, but comfort wise, cost, and ease to mod...this is the way to go

Awesome! Look for the large rolls of foam at Micheal's. Everything I've done so far took one $8 roll and I still have some left over.
The technique I use is to reinforce each piece by ironing fabric on the back of it with "heat n' bond". I shape it as it's cooling and it stays rigid.
You probably know it, but you'll want to make your pattern out of paper first... but also, if you're going to heat the foam, iron the entire roll of foam BEFORE you cut it. Craft Foam shrinks a tiny bit when heated. You'll notice it starting to curl as you iron, I placed a large flat board on it so it would cool flat.
I can't believe after all this time I haven't made a tutorial specifically for craft foam.... If the above doesn't make sense I can go through steps. I still have to do the glove pieces so I can try to take pictures too.
For those of you that suffer from an inadequate Michaels foam selection here is a link where you can order the 2mm by the roll. They also sell 6mm sheets.
Re: Clone Trooper Rex for my 8 year old and Admiral Thrawn for 11 year old.
My son's costume, nearly done - before I painted the shoes and put on the hand armor:
Here he is while we were waiting for the parade/contest. He found a few other clones and they were having a blast chasing each other around. There were also a couple of Jangos that made for a fun time:
Note on the far right and below - dead Rex. *L* clever costume.
Below, my son gets a taste of being a superstar as the kids admire and point out details on his costume. I felt a bit bad about painting his dress shoes white for the costume, until one of the kids noticed it. :$
Oh and... he was one of the winners. $25 gift certificate to Toys R Us... It's nice after his costumes being overlooked for so many years.
