Claptrap

Just thought I'd show early progress of my in work Claptrap from the video game Borderlands. I instantly dug this little guy. Its humor and Star Wars'y look...instant classic! It'll stand about 6.5 inches tall and be hollow for lighting if I decide to go that route. The basic shapes are cut out as well as the first plastic parts sheet. Pretty excited about this one...

Re: Claptrap

I gotta be honest, I was thinking something entirely different when I read the title. Great start, looking forward to your progress!

Re: Claptrap

Thanks guys! This version is the mock up for trial and error. I know I'll be making three for sure. One for my son and two for me...one yellow and one red version with gothic spikes and saw (Tyler Cobb's claptrap in the game). Therefore, I'm figuring out the best way to construct this so that I can cast it using the minimal amount of materials and so it can be hollow.

Re: Claptrap

Awesome! I played the game to death and it's great to see a claptrap come to life!
looking forward to more.

Re: Claptrap

I didn't like the direction I was going with using the art board so I started on the styrene version instead. In the following pictures, you can see that I've loosely test fitted some of the detail parts. Damn, it's bigger than I thought it would be when I drew it!

BTW, the top edge will have the angled panels to raise the top panel a bit higher like in the game.

Re: Borderland's Claptrap

Looks great so far! I loved these guys in the game, though, the game not so much.
Good work!

Re: Borderland's Claptrap

Super cool! I loved that character's design. Looks great so far.

Re: Borderland's Claptrap

Thanks guys!

That is great! Now make him dance.

:thumbsup

Hehe! I'll tell you what. If I can go through with my plans to kit this...you can make it dance all you want. :)

Good work!

I liked the game but was mixed about the graphics. I wonder if the non-cell shaded look Gearbox originally intended would have made it better.

There's actually a quasi-official tweaking utility which allows you to turn the cel-shading on and off (among other things, like a better FoV for widescreen monitors). It's really handy! I think this is the link (been a while since I've played it): [PC Utility] Borderlands Configuration Tool - Gearbox Software Forums

Your Claptrap progress looks great so far!

Re: Borderland's Claptrap

...small update today...

Started work on the "tire guides" at the base of Claptrap's body. Pretty much finished with the front one.

I've spent most of my time this past week waiting on supplies and test fitting the arm recess box. More pics later...

Nothing crazy new....progress has been slow....just got a big Plastruct shipment to help finish some of the details (eye, arms, etc).

The main body is together....

....building up the pegs on the bottom which will be filled with resin for strength....

....dressing up the "arm pits"...the recessed are under the arms....once done, I'll glue the recessed box (minus details) to the main body.

Later,
Joe

Ok, here are some shots of the "arm pits". Pretty simple I think. As for the title change...um, well...I'll just say that I would like to make these parts easier to mold and cast. Which, is why I built the arm recesses using three assemblies. I still need to add some more detail, mainly a vent cover in the lower square cutout.

Recessed box, tubing detail and cover....

...all put together...

...test fit with body.

I'm finishing up the main body touch ups. Making sure corners and edges are as square as possible. I installed the eye recess and you can see that I've come up with the parts for the eye. I'm still working out how I want to create the lens aperture look on the eye tube. I might use individual .010" styrene strips custom cut to give it the same feel as the video game model.

Looks good so far. I just got the game yesterday and haven't managed to get very far but watching the first claptrap run from the bandits was entertaining.
