Charity Events section?

What are the possibilities of having a new section created where we could all plan various get togethers to help with our Charity events?

Not everyone is a member of the 501st or the LoH. So, this would be a chance for us to announce when, where, why on Charity functions and invite RPF members who are local to come on out.

I just see so much untapped potential here on the RPF for more members to get involved. I know SO MANY of the RPF members are already involved in numerous charity events.

Having a special section specifically for Charity events would allow even more people here to become involved!

Think of how much good we could do, how much positivity this could bring, and if you want to sell it - it would be great PR for the RPF. We could make RPF Charity tshirts and members could wear them out. There are just SO many fun ideas we could impliment.

It was just a thought. Simply because I have friends who won't join a specific club - but they would come out to help at a Charity event. I know the same is said for some people here!

Is this possible here on the RPF? Why or why not?

Thanks for listening!

I think people should really just join a costuming club.

One reason is liability, any decent costuming club will have liability insurance in case of accidents and alike, in todays world it's stupid not to be covered where public events are concerned, many places won't allow you to perform without it.
Who will absorb the cost of this insurance ?
Another reason is organisation, events need proper organisation who will do that ? not the staff here, it'll probably take 3 months for one of them to even notice this thread.

Please do not confuse notice with the necessity of an immediate response.

It's a good thing to let the members discuss ideas such as this one, and to possibly come to some consensus that will have enough energy behind it to make it happen even if it's not practical for the RPF.

Your new web site is a perfect example of this (which I applaud you for). The idea of a re-caster or bad seller list has been brought up many times and it has always been the decision that the RPF can not realistically "police" the entire hobby. You personally felt that it was important enough, so you did something about it. :thumbsup

Honestly, I have no idea what youre talking about when you mention insurance. That one confused me so.... ??

When doing charity work we are simply taking either cash, or food donations. Usually we have events at the local mall. In fact, the last fundraiser we had the police brought out their mascot. So...

Basically, I was just thinking that having a little thread or section specifically for Charity events would be great. It has so many positive factors. And really if some people are NOT into Charity work, they can just ignore the section! LOL

It was just an idea. I think it is doable, and I think it could be a great thing for us all to do and get involved in making the world a better place.

Yeah! :) I'm all warm and fuzzy now!

Well when you get sued by a member of the public that's accidently injured or has their property damaged at an event you organise and attend you'll wish you did know what public liability insurance is.
Also i've no idea if there are legal requirements in the US i suspect there probably are for collecting donations, permits, paperwork all that red tape junk, without it you leave yourself open to criminal charges.
You're a 501st member aren't you ? i'd suggest talking with the people running your garrison you'd be surprised at how much goes into organising stuff like this.

I applaud the intentions behind your suggestion charitable work is great i just think you aren't going to find it as simple as you think it is.
You cant just turn up where you like when you like dressed in a costume jangling a bucket.

I'm talking about having a Charity events section of the RPF, and you're talking about lawsuits. :confused :confused We will just agree to disagree then since it seems moot and since I've never heard of that happening EVER here, and since the police were involved in all our events last year. Anyway....

Back to the topic at hand, if anyone thinks it would be a good idea to have a small Charity Events section here on the RPF. It would not longer require any "sticky" threads in any sections, and only those interested could participate. It would allow non-club members (ie those NOT in the 501st or other orgs) to help out and donate their time if they choose. It also offers a chance for positive pr for the forum.

Either way, at least this gives us a chance to discuss it. Change is a good thing, and a small thread dedicated to Charity events members of the RPF are doing gives us all a chance to network on many different levels, if only for suggestions and advice. I know that I have received some GREAT advice from members here about all the events we did last year.

Thanks!

How about just having an Events section where people announce, and discuss conventions, prop parties, charity events, signings, etc.. Charity events might be part of that but it might be better if such a section wasn't limited to them.

Not a bad idea at all! :thumbsup

The board had an events section for quite some time, but it had such little traffic it was folded back into the main prop forum.

I did not know that. Hmmmmm I still think it would be beneficial to those of us interested in Networking to do Charity work. I don't see how it could HURT.....
