Celty Sturluson Helmet

I'm new to the prop making and I need some help with choosing the right materials to make the ears on a helmet for a future cosplay. I have tried cardboard and plastic putty but to mixed results. Can anyone help me with what materials I should use and maybe some advice on making them.

This is my first build and I think I may have taken water over my head with this one.

What I have done so far is removed the paint on an old helmet, made it smooth and tried to make some ears. But I don't like the result. So I'm thinking of removing the ears and try again after your advice.

Hot glue styrofoam to the helmet then cover it with two part epoxy clay, sand, bondo, sand again, bondo again if needed, then paint.
