Casting a Dalek

One of my friends has a self-made Dalek prop that is extremely accurate. He is willing to allow me to take a cast for the purpose of making my own fiberglass copy. However neither of us know how to do this, or if it is even feasible. There is also the matter of potential damage to his own build, which we would like to avoid. Thoughts?

Casting something that big is far, far beyond the capabilities of a novice, IMO. You'll end up making a huge mess, wasting hundreds of dollars on materials and possibly ruining the master.

(rereads) Wow, didn't mean to be such a downer. :(

Maybe you could do it in parts...like the head and details separate...and buildup the body yourself, or get your friend to help.

Figure at least 100.00 a gallon for silicone. and the fiberglass to make the outside jacket..and the clay...maybe you could pay the original maker to make one for you...cheaper?

Seriously...it is a big deal...doable, yes, but expensive.

If its just to make one for yourself it'd be cheaper and easier to build another the same way as your friend did.

No way would you use silicon (FOR THE MOULD.) for the base of the dalek - it's got to be fibreglass.
I'd say the mid section should be done with glassfibre too - problem being if it's a completed piece you're going to screw the finish in the process.
I've got a base that's nearly finished myself, all the info I've weaned so far has been from these two websites - there's even photos of Moulds being made;

You have to wait for moderator approval when you join either of these but it'll be worth the wait - both are amazing sources of info - I have to say ProjectDalek seems to be the better of the two though...

I think he means the mold but the idea of a silicone Dalek is kinda funny. Mayeb jello?

I am no expert but I think Anson means make a mould from fibreglass. Most Daleks start life made from MDF and wood then a mould is taken from that.

claudehaus what style of Dalek does your friend have? What style will you go with if you make one? Any pics would be cool as well of your friends.

It might be an age thing but I can't see past the Genesis Daleks :)

Cheers Chris.

I did mean the mould.
You case make the base from silicon if you wanted - it'd be handy if you were very accident prone...

It's an MDF and wood one with a fiberglass dome. I might just have him help me make my own since the molding idea is out the window. Paint scheme is red with blue bumps. I guess from the movies?

If you need any help or advice drop me a line, I've got a full set of moulds for various styles of Daleks and I've built a few in the past. If I can give you any pointers I'd be more than happy to help you out.
