Carlart Predator Backpack And Cannon Review

Finally got my Predator pack and cannon in from carlart yesterday and wanted to give a quick review of it in light of Prop Store allowing us to take photos of the original pack and cannon a few years ago (see photos of the original Predator pack and cannon here) and own research on many of the model parts on the pack and cannon seen here:

Carl's pack is incredibly lightweight for the size and is made of a slushcast, slightly rubbery resin. The slushcasting is pretty uniform, but very thin. At many of the corners, you can see light coming through the resin and in a few creases, there are actual cracks in the resin. Once I am done with cleaning it up, I plan to backfill it with expanding foam to give it support. The kit is pretty complete and gives you everything you need to create a basic pack. The med-kit is separate, but honestly, I am not entirely sure why as there are some severe join issues that are going to have to be worked out. I suppose if you decided to mechanize the cannon, the ability to remove the med-kit gives you great access into the pack and an area for storing a power source. I am thinking I will ultimately use earth magnets to hold the two pieces together.

There is a lot of slashing around the pack, but it is very easy to take off and due to the slightly rubberize nature of the resin carl used, it is very easy to sand down the surfaces... and omg, are there endless surfaces to sand due to the complexity of the pack.

There is a lot of subtle wonkiness to the sculpt, which would be a detraction on almost anything else, but on the Predator pieces, having a little bit of an organic feel actually works well and reminds me of the original pack. Overall, this is one of the most accurate packs/cannons that has been made available to Predator fans to date. If I had one major gripe it is that we found so many of the original model parts, but they weren't used and you can really tell the differences in size between the parts that were used and the parts that weren't. Still, it is a fantastic piece and I am looking forward to cleaning and painting it up. From here, let the pics speak for themselves.

Not sure what I am going to do with it at this point. Right now, I have a ton of work ahead of me, just cleaning and prepping it.

Right just figured you might have picked up the cannon with intentions to add it to a bust or some sort of
display .

Paint it!
Trust me, I plan to! One of the challenges I see is trying to decide on the color. Based on the original, I feel that the base color should be a flat black with almost a drybrushed silver over it that allows for a lot of the black to show through and then with a light misted black over the top. Thoughts?

I just recently repainted my 1/4 scale neca p1. I know its a lot smaller but bear with me. I painted it black then dry brushed gun metal over it. I then messed it up a bit with some greens browns and yellows, also a bit of bronze on there for a older metal look. Its definitely what I would use on a 1:1 scale.

Got pics? I'd love to see it!

Nice!!!  I am doing a very quick and dirty test today to see what I think of black/silver and also to show where I need to continue cleanup.

OK, got some pics. Again, this is just a test and I learned a few things. Definitely too much silver this first round. I may see what it looks like to scrub just a bit off, but I am really thinking I am almost going to have to do a silver wash on this to get it to look like the original. Also, the paint shows I still have a tremendous amount of cleanup work...

Looks amazing bro!

The silver paint seems fairly close to the original.  Maybe it's just me but looking at the original pack its seems like theres a medium gray weathering in there.  Even a light gray or white for a corroded look.  Just my two cents anyway.

And... we are largely back down to raw plastic! :lol.  I tied some weathering techniques  that only brought out just how rough the surface of this pieces is.  Now, again, this is not, nor ever will be a clean piece, nor should it be, but it needs to be more clean than this!

Thomas, I think is is silver paint that has been diluted and brushed on. I know that seems weird, but in the pics I took of the original pack, I feel like you can see where they wiped the brush inside the pack! I am going to try to do almost a silver wash on the pack once I get it cleaned up a bit more. The intricacy makes it very tedious work, but hopefully the results will be worth the effort.

A ton of cleanup in progress. I am accepting the shortcomings of this as well as trying to bring out the very best of it. I have done in and smoothed a lot of surfaces, cleaned up edges, and made other adjustments like routing out depressions and increasing things like the rivet holes sizes. All of these are small tasks on their own, but the sheer number of surfaces as well as the fragile nature of the overall casting (I have punched through numerous times and am going to have to do a lot of patching) adds up pretty quickly. Overall, I am happy with the direction I am going although there are going to be some very obvious differences from the movie pack.

I wonder if it was a matter of 'hurry up and get this done and shipped out' that caused it to be such a thin casting, and have the "subtle wonkiness" you spoke of.  Any idea what number casting this is Art?  Seems like a pretty good looking piece, but the thinness of it could potentially cause problems down the road.  Does it seem so thin that foaming it could cause warping?

I'll be watching this as I'm in the middle of refurbishing Jamie Hall's backpack right now and I'm going to need to do some paint work. Jamie's backpack was damaged pretty badly during filming and subsequent shipping to me and the forwardmost area of the backpack just ahead of the cannon platform was smashed up. Looking at that area the casting is around 3/16" thick and appears to be pretty consistent throughout the rest of the pack until you get to the raised detail areas at the base of the cannon platform, where it's around 1/16" thick. The cannon platform is around 1/8" thick. I had to cut away some of that raised detail area in order to fit the animatronic servo drive mechanism. I'm reinforcing the broken area of Jamie's pack with epoxy resin and woven cloth to strengthen it. I should have it finished this week now that I finally have some time to work on it. Jamie's backpack feels pretty heavy to me- I'm curious to weigh it and compare it to yours.

On Jamie's backpack the clamshell cover is completely open underneath so that's different. I know the clamshell was made as a separate piece so you can either install the medkit or have room to add animatronics. Adding animatronics is also the reason why there is a separate cover plate that fits underneath the cannon platform. I think eventually I may be able to make the electronics small enough so the medkit will fit. I've been so busy with other projects I just haven't had time to work on it but I think it'll happen. :)

Since you saw the original pack can you tell me if it was fiberglass? Just out of curiosity in the last pic of your first post is that an AT-ST? Sorry, I haven't read through the model parts thread... I was watching the original trilogy with my boys this weekend- they just can't seem to get enough of it and my youngest has a book with all of the vehicles in it that he reads every day. :)

I don't think this was a rush job. I know Carl had some issues with the weather and at least one previous casting was ruined.

I have no idea what number my casting is.

It is a really nice piece. It needs a lot of TLC, but don't misunderstand my criticisms. It is  one of the best packs I have seen.

If I were using regular expanding foam, yes... I would be very worried about warping. However, I found some Great Stuff at Home Depot that specifically said it won't warp things... We will see..
