Captain John Hart jacket (Torchwood)

Looks like an Adam Ant style tunic, I'm told it's a hussar jacket. Anyone have any ideas where a reproduction could be purchased?

Thanks,
Dave

PS Noob first post! Glad to be here!

I'm very interested in doing this costume as well. Here' a bunch of photos I've collected regarding his outfit. I'm curious if the boots were "off the rack" or something more custom - I'm assuming the former.

I was fortunate enough to get to talk to James Marsters yesterday (he's guesting on the TV show I work on), and he was quite excited about Torchwood (he'll be semi-recurring), and thought it was cool I wanted to do the costume - his advice "Well, first you gotta get the Michael Jackson jacket" ;)

Some info from the Torchwood magazine:
Russel T Davies wanted a Grenedier style jacket, but it was deemed too long.
The costume superviser found a 'mess jacket' that had the embroidery design on the front, and then combined it with the Grenadier styling.
Not representative of any particular regiment, according to the article.

That said, an American Civil War era 'Richmond' jacket is a pretty close 'eyeball' match:

This grab shows the rear seams - very like the above:

Hope that helps!

Hi Dave
Welcome to the RPF

You could try these people but they don't look cheap http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~thinred/uniforms.html

Captain Johns jacket appears to be a napolionic era "Dolman" part of a Hussar's uniform, thats about all the info i could come up with

If you click on the above link and scroll down to the "Officer's mess" jacket and waistcoat, look at the sleeves and collar and they are a pretty good match (obviously without the braiding etc)

Ah yeah, so it does! Probably the style comes from the same source, I guess.
Didn't see your post before - should really read the thread before replying! :)

Maybe easier to get hold of the Civil War pattern.

I had opportunity to ask the costume designer about the jacket, and, as I feared it was custom built.

Yeah, I was going to say. BBC tends to custom build alot of their stuff. They have a great costume department that probably chomps at the bit to do nifty custom jobs like that.

I tuned in to Torchwood for the 1st time ever the other night in my hotel room(only basic cable at home, I'm sadly SciFi and BBC free), and thought this would be a cool costume for someone to do. Can't wait to see someone execute this.

I'm currently away on business, but when I get home later this week I'll check my books for patterns. Most of this kind of period style menswear comes from or is inspired by the patterns in "The Cut of Men's Clothes." The seaming on the back was popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and is referred to as a "fiddle back."

Here's what he told me about the jacket:

Originally the producers wanted a Grenadiers jacket but when I looked at them they were simply not sexy or short enough. So I set about some research and found some mess jackets but too plain. Because we needed 3 versions of the jacket I decided to build them and simply designed it with the military braid and some fake buttons. The red and navy is darker than most military coats to give it a richer feel and we put secret pockets in the lining where Captain John could secret some smaller weapons. Then we made it like he'd been through a couple of wars and to a few parties as well.

My wife and her grandmother just completed a 5th Doctor frock coat, and it was a great first go at tailoring a garment from scratch. We're considering having a go at the John Hart jacket. Does anyone know of an affordable pattern for this Richmond style jacket? Also, where would one buy the braiding for the front?

Thanks!

Thanks for this thread. All the input here was really helpful. The pictures are very cool.

I am having a go at the Captain John coat. I found a band jacket in the general right cut. Now I just have to redo the collar and cuffs, and do the braid in front. I just got some extra band cords, and am going to cannibalize them for it.

Just a heads up for those that might be still interested that Bonahams in London will be selling one of the original jackets used in the show next month. Wonder what It will go for.

I hope this thread isn't dead yet. Because I need help on the boots James wore in the show. We're they custom made, or did he wear leather gaiters?

They look a lot like British cavalry boots used during the Great War, perhaps re-enactment suppliers would be the best bet?
