Again - Indiana Jones. There's something way cooler about Cap fighting Nazis - same as the Rocketeer, than some fictional force. Imagine seeing Raiders and they come and tell Indy We're really concerned Abner Ravenwood has teamed with the Swa-Diggers - Hitler's secret digging force who know all about occult items and think the ark can help win the war". Everything it taken away from what bookmarks that time and even romanticises it (because the bad guys were clear) and all power is given to a cartoon creation. Why make it live action? Everytime they yelled "Hail Hydra!" - it sounded like a "safe" patch where something else should have been.

This is only opinion - you didn't feel it needed it - I think it would have made the movie work better - no right, no wrong -

You could have dumped confetti on Carrie at the prom but I'm note sure it would have had the same punch as the pig's blood.

Maybe I just find Indy to be an inherantly more reality based hero, who seems at home fighting Nazis ... I mean, I already feel like he stepped out of newsreels/serials. (As we're meant to, of course.)

For me, the story of a Super-soldier high on magic juice is one step into the realm of myth, and needs an equal match.

That being said, I can see where you're coming from, when Cap has been depicted for so long punchin' the Nazis, that this could seem like a softening of the blow.

Then again, I've never read a Cap comic in my life, so that definitely plays into it.
 
Comic accurate. Hydra has been a force to reckon with forever. Nazis. Who needs them? Not I not the movie. If they had used more nazi crap that would have cheapened the movie a bit. As it is now it has just the right amount, but more importantly it set up the red skull who is caps main villain just as lex luthor is supes and the joker bats. I will repeat best movie ever. Captain America is not Indiana jones. (thank god). And I don't mean thank god in a negative light.

Really guys? Everyone loves THIS movie? My God, it was worse than any Stallone or Arnold movie from the 80's or 90's. It was bad. Not just bad - it was silly.

The best part was when he was selling war bonds.

Wow. What a terrible terrible movie. Yuck. Oh, the main female character was super hot. She was my favorite FAVORITE part.

Are you absolutely sure you didn't see the Matt Salinger Cap movie from the 90's? Because, otherwise, I'm beginning to doubt your sanity, man.

This movie even edges out Iron Man by a small amount as the best comic book movie I've seen in decades.

I'm with IndyFan, i didn't like it either. Loved the red skull but i was pretty bored by the rest most of the way through
 
After seeing Captain America in 3D on opening day I saw it a second time yesterday in 2D. As a big supporter of 3D I have to say I enjoyed it more the second time. It just appeared to look better and for me worked better as a movie based in the 40's. Now looking forward to the blu-ray. :cool
 
Anyone that doesn't like and thoroughly enjoy Captain America seriously has a few screws loose. Or absolutely no attention span.
 
Someone over on the Steve Jackson Games (roleplaying games, etc.) Forums said the Howling Commandoes were incorrect for the period, because they were racially integrated. He said because it was incorrect for what was a period piece, it brought him out of the movie.

Someone else told him it wasn't a period piece, it was a comic book movie. He argued back that it was a period piece. I told him only if the period included superheroes and energy weapons. I said it's a Marvel Comics WWII period piece, not a Real-world period piece.

I'm waiting to see where the discussion goes.

Any thoughts on that here?

I agree with you: set in the past doesn't necessarily equal 'period piece'. I loved Cap, but I would never refer to it as a period piece.
 
Agreed. I think part of the problem people have with the lack of nazis or similar complaints are that they are going into this expecting it to be period accurate, or more grounded in reality. It's still a comic book movie. It just happens to take place during a specific time frame in real world history. All the hail hydra stuff is right from the comics too iirc. The only way it would have made sense to have more nazis would be if the villain was Hitler instead of Red Skull. Granted, that might have been interesting, but it wouldn't have been anywhere near as close to the source material as what we got. Something I'm very thankful for. Say what you want about the Marvel flicks, they respect the source material in a way few movie adaptations of any kind do.
 
It's an alternate universe period piece. Stark and the other hi-tech didn't happen here.

And Hitler didn't get into fistfights with G.I.s. [Inglourious Basterds withstanding, which is just as fanciful as Captain America, or more-so.]
 
This is all alternate universe, but I see what you're saying. I was looking for something else -- my fault. You guys are right.

I must say it diminishes the movie even more for me. It's a shame they took this so far away from the reason the character was created in the first place - to crush the very real opposition we faced during WW2, to inspire our boys behind enemy lines and let them know we were all routing for them. He never really existed, but he did represent something once. But, this being a different world now, it only makes sense Cap would ned to battle a fictitious threat. This is more of a... Nerfball Captain America who goes up against Facebook level threats with World of Warcraft or Call Of Duty stakes hanging in the balance.

As for the Howling Commandos issues - they weren't Americans - they were an international team. I'm pretty sure the race issue they are discussing was the garbage going on back here. France, Norway, Finland, Sweden and even parts of Ireland were far less bigoted.

Maria is mentioned by name in Iron Man 2, during the home movies that Howard filmed. At one point, Tony has picked up a piece of the EXPO miniature and Howard asks "Where's your mother?" then calls for Maria.
 
Just got back from watching it.

I must say from the outset that I didn't 'connect' with the movie, but this is because I was not attracted to the comic book as a kid.

Having said that, I must say that I liked the film. The effects, story, etc etc, all very good.

I did, however, glance at my watch at a certain point, which is extremely unusual for me :confused

Tommy Lee Jones was really good .... as usual :cool

I therefore felt this movie was a sort of 'initiation', and I am very much looking forward to the definite sequel, especially given the ending as it did :thumbsup

I am 100% sure I will love the sequel 10 times more than this one :)
