"Captain America, how exciting!" TWS TFA Rescue USO and Ultimates WW2

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Overall shape of the helmet looks great. The eyes are a little thin, they are quite big on the real helmet.
Oh and same here for the leather tack nail heads.

Thanks for the good comments. Picture being worth a 1,000 words.

You can see the test pep has closer to correct eyes.
To be honest what I need are the eyes and bottom rim of a urethane helmet to mate with the upper and back hardshell of mine.
I am worried if I have the correct large eye size and narrow cheek line that I may end up with a fiberglass shaft from the cheek in my eye socket.

While it is stronger, reason for the change, it doesn't look friendly when worn but rather mean.

Added a second coat and then penciled in where I will file the eyes to open them up a bit.

Thanks! That's a big dog.

Here is the belt I picked up last time I was at Target.

Liked that it had the holes similar to a WW2 pistol belt and had the same buckle as this version of the Cap.

The replacement "not movie accurate" but metal and functional buckle arrived in the mail to day.

I put in in a ziplock bag with some paint remover and gave it a good shake.
After the majority of the paint was gone and it was sufficiently dinged up, cleaned and then filled the two gaps on the left hand side with JB weld.

I like what you've done/will do with that buckle. I bet if you fill the depressions on the pieces that you pinch in to unlatch it w/ JB weld it would have an even more movie like appearance. Nice find, Fly!

Looking awesome buddy! I'm excited to see how this is coming together in the near future! If any of you guys are gonna be in NYC for NY Comic Con, let me know!

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Yeah he unfortunately passed four years ago while I was deployed, now I have an even bigger beast. Old English Mastiff weighing in around 190-200. I can't wait to see the finished product man!

Know how that feels. Lost my Lab on my second deployment.

I can't wait either. Still haven't found the fabric. Wife says wait and buy the UD suit but I think I will do a Roblenzz (cosplay heavily modified and reinforced with cotton duck) then I can pull a pattern and do a full suit later, that is, if I can get the HBT fabric.

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

That's pretty much the same route that I took, I was going to get the UD replicas suit, but I really didn't see myself riding with it on much considering the NC heat is ridiculous. So I ordered a Cosplay suit, when I get that in I'll modify it, then I can just start using that suit for patterns.

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Friday was the toxic shake 'and bake' buckle, yesterday and today is Yugo pouch stew.

These were really moldy, brittle, and stank but they were only $10, total..... You get what you pay for.

Here is what they looked like from the start.

And here is what I ended up with.

Before I cleaned the pouches, first one I opened, the flap came off.
After cleaning I was able to open the others but the first tab I punched shattered.???!!! :facepalm

Newer and more of a matched pair would have produced a better result... at least the final color is OK.

Not far into this and I already have more of a redo than I expected.

Looks great buddy!! Lovin' the way this belt has turned out.

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Thanks.
Could someone provide a cost and material list for comparison using Sandman's pattern to see if there is has been any real savings for those that may try this short cut.

Here is the place I ordered from:
https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=442
Including shipping it was $17 for two pouches.
They were well packed and came very fast. Certainly vintage.

Could have tried this
FS: Vintage WWII Leather Ammo Pouches
Cost with shipping would have been $30 but I may have had the same results.

The idea was to modify as below.

In the end, the only thing I didn't do was cut the sides.

Since my pouches were in such sorry state, I used some leftover bits of leather jacket glued to the backside of each tab with rubber cement.

The same was done to the inside of the flap that came off.

Each pouch has a block of polyethylene closed cell foam, leftover kayak bulkhead material, rubber cemented inside to maintain shape and keep the sides together.

The dye is the same medium brown leftover from the rescue jacket.

If and when these are scrapped at least I have four vintage brass posts and two steel D rings.

When I redid some of my pieces, I got a 6 square foot piece of leather, 4-5oz from Tandy at a pretty decent price of about $18, and that was more than enough to do the pouches and then some. Assuming you have all the leather working tools already, all you would need are the posts which run a couple dollars a piece new

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Thanks Kevin.
Minus the cost of the tools, your new pouches are even in cost with my cheap-o's.
Based on that, I cannot recommend buying and modify a set of surplus pouches unless time was a factor.
Better of just making from scratch.

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Hey Fly, as an option for folks looking, the UCMC Cartridge belt was the way I went, since it did not have the U.S. marked on the front pouch seemed a tad more SA, and as a bonus it was $5 less... :)

Great job on the later Hero outfit, love that belt find!

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

the pouches look near as damn it the same ones I used for mine but I got mine off ebay.... I used a leather boot polish on mine and came out pretty nice, I contemplated doin what you did by cutting the strap bits down but really couldn't be ass'd with it lol belt looks great though dude ;)

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

I could ditto what Kevin said, but what you did with what you got is something to be proud of. When all was said and done with your tool cost you would have been over budget and plus you would have to factor in some "trial and error" pieces as both Kevin and I went through :lol
