Captain America Helmet

So I had plans on creating a Captain America helmet of my own. It got put on the back burner, as life happened and took me away from any and all projects. Now a year later I have finally gotten back to it. So here are some shots of my progress.

I had never used Monster Makers Clay before, and this was my result of my first project with it.

The cast came out decent but needed a lot of cleanup as my sculpting skills with the monster makers clay were not that great.

I then found out that it didn't fit my head, and that the mold had warped/shrunk slightly. So I had to do a hack job, cutting it first in half from ear to ear, to lengthen it from front to back. Then I had to cut down the center from brow to back, to widen it. Filling in the gaps with bondo.

Now we are at my more recent stages this year. The cast was extremely lop-sided because my mold warped. So I had to add a lot of filler to one side to make it match. Plus widening the helmet made the ear cut outs to wide. So I backed that with cardboard and filled away. Here is what I had.

So my plans being to make a second cast, and funds getting tight. I took some advice and switched up to using joint compound as filler. I am using flat black spray paint, in between coats. So I can see blemishes that need work a little better. This is where I am .

The shape has changed drastically, in trying to save this failure. I still need to build the brow area back up. The bridge of the nose and cheek bones needs fixing. The ear holes need cut back out. After I get this dome smoothed out like I want it. Then I guess I will mold and recast.

If it were me I'd use what you have as a form to resculpt a new one on. Your original sculpt looked great and this time you know it would fit.

I will be doing that once I get the shape of the helmet right, and it smoothed out properly. I will be using epoxy sculpt, to get the brow back to its original look.

Bringing my comic-like brow back to life on this helmet. Using Magic Sculpt, for the first time. I am still not happy with this, but it is coming together slowly.

How's this coming along? It reminds me of my trial and errors on my helmet build. It looks great so far. Keep at it man and it'll pay off :thumbsup

That's too bad it shrunk, because the original sculpt looks pretty good to me. How was working with Monster Clay compared to other mediums? I am tempted to try that stuff out.

Monster clay is much harder than other clay I have worked with. I have mostly only worked with Van Aken Plastelina, which is very soft in comparison. It holds more detail, but doesn't soften as easily.

Well my attempts have failed, unfortunately. My helmet cracked into peices. Probably due to flux in temperature here in Maryland lately. I put it away for a short while, in storage. When I got to it again, it was ruined.

Thankfully I have my original sculpt still, and it is in good shape. Time to modify it, for my larger noggin.
