so, as it seems there are no ways to get a good metal base around here, and the plastic stuff is too expensive for what its worth and also not perfect, i decided to pep this thing (again)
as it is a quite easy pep and im also not good at waiting for stuff, this is the best option, also if im gonna cast it in resin, a new metal shield would be like wasting it as it wont be used ever again other than presentation

so, i pepped for a few hours today, and this is a straight forward pep, so here are some pics

so the pepping is finished, and i like the outcome very much.

its 70cm in diameter, which is about 27 inches
the table is gonna be 1x1 metres (maybe 1.1x1.1, not sure yet), so pretty good for a couch table

oh that looks sweet! Are the rings stepped? Or are there grooves between the rings, hard to tell from the pic angles, but they looked stepped. Again, always amazed at what you guys can do with pep.

nope there are groves between the rings, they are a little deep due to pep, but with resining this will fill out a little and with bondo it will not be as deep anymore, just enough to notice

so i finished resining and fibreglassing today, just need to cut the exceeding fibreglass and then bondo and sand it

i sorta decided on the wood, as it seems there is no dark wood in my price range available anywhere near, and also i would have a damn lot work with fixing it up to fit my needs. a friend of mine works in a wood shop and he told me that it doesnt come in the dimensions i want them and i would have to buy at least double the amount i need because of cut off.

so im going to go with cheap wood, which im gonna spraypaint in a few layers, so the table is gonna be black. (probably, if i cant find other wood kinds)

the dimensions of the table are gonna be 1m x 1m, feet are gonna be 10cm x 10 cm, and the depth of the display box is gonna be 15 cm minus the glass on top, so somewhere between 14 and 15 cm depending on the glass. not decided on the lights yet, because i still dont know how to solve the power problem (im not good with electric stuff either)

Shield is looking great! Have you thought about a dark stain over pine? Maybe an ebony or a walnut? I guess it depends on if you want the woodgrain look or not.

well i thought about staining, but with light wood it will just look like old furniture, or get a slight green stain, which is not my intent.

also, i just went to get food, and, strangely, they have spray paint for discount.

they only have gold, chrome, black and clear, but basicly, that is all the colors i need for all of my projects (except for the shield)

but war machine and the table just need this color, and its 3.49 for a can, so i will buy their whole stock XD
you can allways use black, chrome and clear for anything, so this looks like a good deal

The shield is coming along nicely. I'm glad you were able to find a cheaper option than a metal shield.

yey update time

i started filling it today, and got a lot of sanding done
smart guy at the store where i bought the sanding paper told me i dont need 40 and 60 grit because its way too rough, so i went with 80 upwards...
after 3 hours of sanding, i went to the store, and got 40 and 60 too, then another 3 hours of sanding, which got about 2 as much results as the earlier 3
well, its not there yet, because the star was slightly warped and now i got to fix that with filler

still, its getting there

on a side note, does anyone have an idea what i can fill in on the back side, so it doesnt look like it does right now(see post before this one) i am not sure if i can cut out the fold lines where the rings are connected, because there would be no fibre glass there then, and also there is basicly only the filler connecting those parts then) i was thinking of gluing foam inserts in between, use a little filler over the folds and spray paint it in chrome, but im not sure that will work, as i need to fix the handles in there too

well lots of sanding and filling today, and im getting there. it still has 2 deformed areas due to it being pepakura, but one more time filling those will probably do it. other than that, its allready pretty smooth, as smooth as it gets with 40 grit paper

finished sanding for the most part today

120 grit paper, it still has 2 small holes that need filling, but thats a matter of minutes will go up to 200 grit tomorrow, and also cut the groves (not sure how tho, any ideas?)

soo i got the marks down for where the groves are. i tried to do it with a sanding head on my dremel, but that did not work, i had to refill and sand the parts i used the dremel on. im not sure how i should do the detailing, so if anyonehas an idea, please help

any chance you can put a center hole on it to act as a compass to control your dremel cuts? Then fil the hole back in after. This will work for the circular grooves, but not the star grooves. This was also how I did the prototype shield, and it worked on aluminum.

hmm i can try cutting with my dremel, i used the sanding head to do it, maybe a cutting disk will work better. i can put a hole in the middle, but i am not sure how to work that together with the dremel
