Can someone with the 2001 novel help me out?

I want to make the big giant monolith from 2001.

Well, a scaled model of the 2001 version, since the moon one was huge.

I forgot the measurements though, and I cannot find my book around here anywhere. Any chance someone has the novel and can find out for me?

Thanks!

From the novel 2001 describing the monolith found on the moon.

"The object before which the spacesuited man was posing was a vertical slab of jet-black material, about ten feet high and five feet wide..."

Hope that helps.

The ratio was "a perfect 4:2:1" no matter what the size. The 3rd novel [I think] said the Monolith on Europa was a mile long!

I think the monoliths only had that proportion in "2010" and later Clarke books. In Kubrick's movie they are much more slender.

Clarke admitted at one point that he invented the proportion after the movie had been made. In earlier drafts of "2001" Clarke made the monoliths a transparent Tetrahedron.

As you can see the movie Monolith is taller than 9:4, and thinner than 4:1.

And as usual, its origin and purpose... still a total mystery. :D

I am thinking of just a slab of black crystal (stuff is awesome) for it.

IIRC IJ's were adonized aluminum with a black powder coat or something to that effect.

I wonder how big a 1/6th scale one would look.... hmm.......

Appreciate the help though guys. I want one to show off with the remasted 2001 dvd I got this week. Late birthday gifts rule!

Now keep in mind the proportions listed in the novel are a little different than the actual film piece. The monolith in the film 2001 was just about 12 feet tall.

any chance someone can get me a screen cap of a guy standing next to the monolith?

I might try to go the 1/6th scale route if it won't be massive. I don't want it tipping over and squishing anything (toys, props, me).

****, you mean to tell me someone did a run of lifesize monoliths on this board. Man, that guy and the people who bough one are just crazy.....so, where can I get one?

=the board run was of powder coated aluminium ones on a base but were 9" tall not full size..

I believe they were $95, I got the last one, back in the day.

I used to keep it on my desk. It was amazing how many people actually recognized it.

I was just thinking the other day "I wonder if someone on the RPF has made the Monolith yet.."

I gotta get myself one of these, to display with my HAL 9000 (once I get one, haha).

OH! LOL! I though someone had made a LIFESIZE FULL SCALE monolith! Now that would be a prop!

well someone did .:rolleyes
it was in England IIRC but not a member . it was done to commemorate the year 2001.
on the cheeper side you can order a piece of stock aluminium that measures 1" x 4" x 9" and paint it.
it is a stock size to metal suppliers.:thumbsup
