I have been a huge fan of the Call of Duty franchise since its start in 2003. Since then I’ve watched and played as the game franchise grew into what it is now, one of the foremost first person shooter video game series on the market. In 2008 Treyarch released World at War, which is to this day my absolute favorite Call of Duty release. It was also the first game in the series to introduce a new game mode called Nazi zombies. With this new game mode came some less than conventional weapons to fight the endless waves of undead SS soldiers. While there are now many different "Wonder Weapons" the Ray Gun was the first, and will always be my go to.

In all honesty, I had started a Ray Gun replica about 5 years ago. It was a colossal failure, so I scraped the idea. But a couple months ago I came across the drawings in a desk drawer and so I sat down at the computer and started 3D modeling a new, much more improved design.

Now that I’ve wasted enough of your time with the back story, here are some pictures of the build! As of now its not quite done, so keep checking back in.

I always enjoy hearing opinions and thoughts, so feel free to comment what you think!

It All Starts With A Design.
Nearly a full week of drawing and designing went into the final version of the gun (there were a lot of different versions). Unfortunately the in-game model I pulled was very low poly and was essentially useless, so I started from scratch. This new model was designed using SketchUp in case anyone wanted to know.

3D Printed Assembly.
22 separate pieces printed by Shapeways in their Strong White and Flexible material. Yes, it was costly. $$$.$$

Mock Assembly.
Snug as a bug.

Base Paint and Decals.
I have never really been a fan of Rustoleum paint, but in a time crunch with a broken airbrush compressor, it would have to do. It was ok. These decals you see were designed in SketchUp, printed on gold foil, then imported straight to my Silhouette Cameo software for cutting. I honestly love that machine, its so amazing. I was just size testing the decals in the first couple of these photos.

Final Paint with Added Detail.
Sorry, there is a rather noticeable gap of photos here. But after painting the rest of the parts with the base color I decided I didn't really like it (too boring). So I spiced it up! If you know me, you know I love doing scratched metal paint on things. I thought it was pretty fitting for this project, and I was very happy with the results.

Final Paint with Added Detail. (Continued)
Just some more photos of the final paint detail I added to make the gun look more realistic.

Let There Be Light!
The model was always designed to have LEDs in it, however with some help from a friend we were able to get them to pulsate in a pattern (something I had never attempted before). The amount of work and headaches was well worth the final result. I will try and add a video to demonstrate. It is probably the coolest thing I have ever seen.

This is the final set of build photos for this project. If anyone from Treyarch is reading this, I'm currently unemployed. ;)

Mystery Box Stand.

I found some old wood in the backyard of my property, so I sanded it down and stained it to make a cool stand. I knew right away that this would be the perfect opportunity to build a Mystery Box stand. I warmed up the Cameo and begin designing the decals to go on top of it. I am very pleased with the final result.

The Finished Project.
Here are the final pictures of the completed project on my shelf of many things.

Hi there, new member here. I found your post after searching for some COD Ray gun schematics for months. Would you be able to post up the sketchup files for us to use?

How come? I'm just really eager to build this and I have to start from scratch with no design experience. This design is perfect and I would love to recreate it.

I really don't want to intervene your conversation here but twtealio, just think yourself into his position: He has probably been sitting in front of SketchUp for days or even weeks, carefully trying to recreate this weapon until he was happy and went on to 3D printing. Most people don't see all the hard work and headache that goes in modeling, measuring, etc and so it should be even more understandable if someone is not willing to share their outcome.

And I guess if you were at his point you would think the same, right? :)

Its not so much that I don't want to share my outcome with anyone, I do plan on making kits available eventually (which in itself is one of the reasons I don't want to give the files away for free). Its just the idea of putting my 3D drawings up on the internet for anyone to take and copy, or modify as their own, or print as many guns as they want and sell them doesn't really sound like a good idea. supermaRiio is right, I did spend a lot of time on these drawings, and to give them away for nothing doesn't sound particularly appealing. Sorry twtealio.

This isn't the best way to make an impression on the site, especially with only 2 posts. It's a good way to get on everyone's avoid list.

In all honesty, i'd be rather flattered if somebody wanted to copy my designs. But then, people probably won't believe me since i've never created anything.

Look guys, i'm not trying to demand that acereplicas uploads his designs. I was just asking. I understand I look like a leech with 2 posts - I literally discovered this post the second I made my account and got super excited about it. It's a beautiful piece and is absolutely perfect.

I'm sorry for getting off on the wrong foot. I don't really see what else I could have done. I don't want to turn this thread into a flame war.

Don't worry, there are no hard feelings yet this is turning out to be a flame war in any kind :) Just stating my/our opinion here.

For example: I'm currently working on a Gravity Gun replica here on the forum and sat around five months (with a few pauses) in front of AutoCad trying to work out blueprints for it. If YOU would spend this time just to be able to finally start the building process you would think twice if someone came along and asked you for providing your plans to them, right?
Why would you hand out your work, on which you spent time, headache and enough nerves?

You don't have to be sorry either man, you did nothing wrong :) I just tried explaining it to you the best I could.
Hopefully you can understand.

Cheers,
Mario

Yo Acereplicas, Question: when do you think that kits will be available because i would love to have a piece of your art in my room. And Another question, do you accept Suggestions or requests?

I am currently gathering the materials to make a ray gun myself I was wandering something. You said that you would like to come out with kits to sell. Have you? I would love to buy a kit if you were willing to offer. If not I completely understand. I would love to get ahold of those decals you made. I love this piece so much you have done a fantastic job

This is an amazing replica! The detail is incredible and the model itself is an awesome interpretation of the in-game model. This thread inspired me to make my own version since getting a 3d printer this summer.
