Building Prop Cars: KITT, Ecto 1, or Delorean...

I've slowly been getting tougher props to build. starting with a proton pack, moving on to R2D2.

One of my dream builds would be a movie car conversion. Either an Ecto 1, Delorean, or KITT. Out of the three, one would think KITT would be the easiest to convert.

So, a few questions..
- out of the three, which cars are the easiest to find in the best shape, if not like new?
- are there any video series following the construction of said cars?
- what would total cost be of one of the three, including car purchase?

- what's the coolest thing you've had happen to you because of the car build?

It'll probably never happen, but one could dream! maybe it'll be my "I've earned it because I made 50" project :).

This should probably be posted in the replica props section and not off topic. You will get more views and proper info over there to help you out :)

NeilT,

If you decide to go with KITT, You should visit www.knightdesigns.com

He makes the best parts out there. He has even had the original designer
of KITT, Michael Sheffe (who also did the delorean for BTTF) at his shop
helping with a conversion.

Billy is a top notch guy and you wont be disappointed in anything you get
from him.

As an ex-K.i.t.t builder i really wouldn't think anything about it is easier than the other two you mentioned. I have had the fortune over my years to work on replicas of all three cars you mentioned and in my experience none of them are a novice build. And all present their own unique challenges.

Alot of people underestimate how hard it is to get KITT looking like KITT no part you ever buy will fit 100%. I put 8 years into mine before finances forced his sale and he still wasnt done that day either

To answer your questions,
1 Trans Am followed by Delorean followed by MM hearse
2 Youtube contains many vids of people doing bits but no comprehensive build piece by piece
3 Total cost is entirely up to you the cars vary, the parts vary then there is shop bills and the ever underestimated "value" of your time
4 the coolest thing that ever happened when i owned my Kitt was meeting the creator of the tv original and the delorean for bttf Mike Scheffe.

Hope this helps

hmm...I might just buy that kitt voice box just for the hell of it..too bad he doesn't list prices. never understood that practice. wonder if you can program it to do random william daniels voice tracks.

speaking of which, is there a good site that has at least somewhat movie accurate BTTF car props? even if i don't get the chance to do a full car, can at least have a cool desk piece :)

I see prices. There are links to what he currently has available.
Not all items are ready yet but many of them have the prices and photos.

Can't help on the Delorean stuff though. Sorry.

I think imho KITT has way more scope than the rest. As with any robots or droids the challenge of being able to make it "do" something is the greatest challenge. I so want a robot...

after seeing the new KITT GE commercial, it'd be tempting just to have the dash completed. that's most of the car anyway minus the scanner :). if i happen to find the car later, i'd be almost half done ;o)

too bad companies don't remake classic cars so it'd be easier for modders to buy new :)
