Hey there all!
This is my first thread here on Therpf and I'm looking to share some insight on my costume as it takes shape. I'm also hoping to get feedback and some suggestions as to how to proceed on certain parts of the build. You should know I'm primarily of foam builder, so that will be my go-to response for most problems.

Here's what I've got so far:

Walkman Replica - foam/plexiglass prop

At this point I'm still looking for a cheap solution for the jacket (preferably the long coat, but the short one's nice as well).

I'm also going to fabricate the ball/sphere/artifact thing from the trailer.

And I'm still looking for belts and things to make the bandoleer and bag he has.

Lastly, I need a good pair of gloves to go with the costume.

I'll be updating frequently so check back regularly. The plan thus far is to have this thing done in time for the premiere in August!!

Fantastic job so far! The foam walkman and helmet are mint as all get out! Great job, will be watching this!

Definitely subscribed! I'm hoping to do a Star-Lord build as well for an upcoming convention and I am loving getting to see everyone else's work. :)

Walkman looks great! Can you go into more detail about your process in creating it?

I second that. I was thinking about some classic earphones and using my iphone. If I can hide an Iphone in the foam Walkman, I'll be set.

Ha! I had that EXACT same thought yesterday. Foam walkman, hollow at the back, snug-fit my iphone in the back and have it clipped to my belt. Costume correct and handy too!

Easy to load the soundtrack as well. Seriously.......who still makes mix tapes?

Of Course:

I started by making a rectangular template larger than the Walkman itself.

I then traced the pattern several times onto various thicknesses of foam.
20140609_211524.jpg

After cutting them all out I dremeled the tread off the back of the thicker foam.

Then I laminated the three pieces together with E600 and let that sit overnight.
20140609_214504.jpg20140609_215006.jpg

I then cut out a more exact rectangle and then, using LOTS of reference pictures, added the buttons, detail lines, and doodads.
20140610_112328.jpg20140610_124152.jpg

After that was done I hollowed out a spot for the "cassette tape" and I used a printout of the tape sandwiched between two thin sheets of plexiglass to give it some sharp inner detail.

Right now I'm sealing the foam and adding a little wood filler to the cracks and seams. Hope this helps!!

Not much to post. I basically put a couple coats of glue on the Walkman and applied a bunch of wood filler to the helmet.

Not much progress over the weekend. I did, however, get a few coats of glue on the Walkman which I sanded down repeatedly. I then realized there was an unholy gap between the foam and the plexiglass, so I have some wood filler drying now to resolve the issue.

I also got a few basic cut-outs of the gun made.

I'll be laminating them together and then cutting/sanding them down in much the same way I did the Walkman. More to come!!

Awesome! I love the helmet/mask great job on that. Wish I was nearly as talented as that... We'll have to see how well my version comes out when I get around to it..

Sorry for being silent a while. I was busy at camp and working on several other costumes. This project got upgraded from a one man endeavor to a five man group costume. My friends and I will all be going to the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy in costume as Star Lord, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, and a Nova Corpsman. I've been going HAM trying to finish all these, and I haven't really had a chance to post. That being said, here's some pictures!!

Man it looks really great :D
I'm working with my friends on a similar project for our country's premier, and I'm star lord. can you post the template for the boots you used? or did you jsut eyeball it?

I'm digging the Groot mask. It looks great and also looks to be comfortable to wear as well.

Nice progress man, that's an ambitious project! I hope you don't have to do all of the work on these, but if you do, even more props for cranking out some nice work in a really short timeframe! Can't wait to see the finished products, especially the Nova. :)
