BTTF Marty Sunglasses

I don't think they were entirely custom made, maybe 'frankensteined'. but then again Roland emailed vintagesunglasses and got a confirmation that it is a rare model.

This photo posted on pg 4 by db537 shows the actual lens color.

I was wrong thinking I was wrong earlier. o_o I thought the lens were grey with a mirror coat since the photos spyhunter2k are the only photos I've seen of MFJ wearing the sunglasses in enough natural light to make a call on what they might be, or so I thought.

In this photo, the lenses look black since we can see them on the inside. Now its just a matter of figuring out how much reflective coating the surface of the lenses have. They appear to have a half mirror coat since we can actually see a bit of MJF's face through them. A full mirror coating seems to be throwing us all off since full mirror lenses do look off and too...chrome. and people's faces aren't visible through them.

Are your aviators full mirror? They lens color looks real good but you can tell if they are or not depending on whether you can still see yourself a bit.

No they are not full mirror.

I say chromed.

I agree.

I don't think having a tinted lens gives the correct reflective look that people expect to see from the movie and the pictures. Cool reflective 80's mirror look is awesome. I say dark mirror is the way to go! We just need to see some options or pictures of lenses that Magnoli's suppliers can offer.

Ok... so photographing semi-mirror lenses is tricky. Here are two photos I just got from our lens supplier:

I'm going to get physical samples in a few weeks and will see what they're like in person.

Ok... I think this sample might be just what we're looking for! Check out these photos in different lighting conditions:

It's really hard to capture, but outside and over dark surfaces, it definitely has a very reflective surface, but with a light background (or just holding it up with nothing near it) you can see through it much more easily than full mirror lenses. I would call these black or smokey reflective lenses.

So, what do you think?

Looks like a pretty good lens to me! I think seeing them in the black frames will help too. Any more information on the frames Magnoli? Do we know if the top bridge is something that can be made in one piece or two? Have you had any more thoughts on the logo on the bridge. I think leaving the space for a decal to be added could be a good idea. I know a lot of people are interested in having them as close to the real thing as possible, myself included, so having the logo as a decal / water transfer separate could be good. Or maybe having the bridge with logo 3D printed and sold as a separate piece, so a the buyer can clip it to the top of the frames. What are your thoughts

Personally, I think the 83188 West Germany logo I came up with is the best option. The logo itself is very small, and you'd have to look extremely close to discover it doesn't actually say "ZEISS" on it. I think haven't the actual embossed piece will be much more convincing than a flat sticker.

To illustrate my point, here is the logo I designed:

Once you put it on the glasses and resize the image to approximate life-size... the logo is so small that it is easily misread as ZEISS:

I could talk to our factory and see what the additional costs would be to make that piece removable and perhaps include a extra blank version with each pair.

I agree from a distance I read ZEISS and i think thats the best option to go with

Yes. I managed to find an original pair of zeiss glasses with the correct brow bar which i took off and fixed to a cheap pair of aviators
