BPRD patches.

After the amazing Broom's Box thread, I decided to break out the plates I had done for embossing leather, paper, and wood.

I separated the B.P.R.D. from the large plate as it might cause it to bend.

I soaked the leather for about 6 hours, and did a test. It's looking like it'll be a 48 hour soak, as this is 9-10 Latigo, I think.

This one, the pressure wasn't even, and the leather wasn't as wet as it should have been on half of it. I've got all the leather in plastic bags completely immersed now.

Here's another test, It needs more moisture.

By Monday I should be ready to press these out. I'll post pics then.

Very cool!

Can you talk a little more about how the process works?

Where do get the plates made?

How do you apply the pressure?

I went to an engraver, had the plates made. Make sure that the plates are a negative of what you want to emboss, that way you aren't printing a negative.

These will be pressed with a 12 ton brake press. This was just a test today, and the leather is simply not wet enough for the dies to punch deep enough, with any uniformity. You don't want to bend your dies.

Actually, with Latigo, cold water is your friend as you don't want to wash out the dyes that make the leather that rich red color.

I won't be posting pics until after Monday. I've got to let these soak at least 36 hours before I do any more press work. I want to make sure that the embossing takes. Then it'll be at least 3 days of drying time, removal of extra material, putting the stitch grooves in them, and all that.

Later today I'm going to give the press a shot again to see if I get an even deep embossing. If so, then I'll have them done today.

Pics forthcoming.

Cool patches!

I would like to get one.

At my work, we still have a leather factory in the warehouse.

We have several stamp presses for logos, usually with foil to get an even

color after embossing.

The machine is heated and the leather is dry.

Well the good soak worked out better than I thought. Next time I think I'll just try misting the surface, as the water that permeated the leather almost worked against the press. At any rate, now all that's left is to trim to circles, and put a stitch groove on all of them.

Thanks for looking!

Wow , I want 2. e-mail when they are finish if the price is right for me.

I'm trying to decide if I'm even going to make these available. They're just kind of cool to have around.
