Borderlands Psycho Mask - any tips for a first timer?

Hey!

I was inspired by all the Comic Con 2012 photos that have been floating around and noticed a girl dressed as a psycho from Borderlands. Badass! I found this mask example online and would want to get as close to this as possible:

Due to my limited mask making experience (ie a plaster masquerade mask I made a while back) here is my plan so far...

1. Get a cheap plastic mold from a crafting store, cover with plaster fabric
2. Let dry, remove plastic mold
3. Mold the mask with the plaster fabric to match the psycho mask
4. Cover with Bondo to smooth it out
5. Sand, Seal and Paint
6. Figure out what to use to make the metal fan mouth part and do that...

I noticed a lack of plaster masks in the RPF and I'm not sure if that is due to anything specific. So, any hints or alternate methods you can suggest for a beginner costumer would be awesome.

I think the reason for that is because most people employ the use of Pepakura in their mask-making instead of plaster...though it sounds almost as if you're making a Pepakura mask based on your steps (minus the actually paper cutting part).

Since this mask is from a videogame, you should have no problem tracking down a Pepakura file once the game is released, which will give you a game-accurate mask.

Personally, I prefer hand-sculpting the mask using floral foam and skinning the sculpt in Bondo. Once I've achieved a good layer of Bondo, I dig the floral foam out and sand the inside smooth.

As for the mouth fan, the photograph you've posted makes the fan look like it's made of trimmed bits of sheet metal...but I say make it easy on yourself and use an appropriately-sized PC cooling fan with blades that match the source material most accurately. Paint the blades silver and you're good go go!

Good luck with your build!

That computer fan idea is awesome! I am definitely going to look into that.

I guess my hesitation for doing the pepakura is that I've never used fiber glass before. I'm sort of worried about how it will work out and the cost of the materials.

However, there is a file that I found online... my problem is I work on a mac so I'll have to borrow a computer to get the files printed.

Perhaps if I watch a ton of youtube tutorials on the fiberglassing part I'll be okay with doing it this way...
