Bodhi's Comm-Cable Backpack

So yea, since I like to make backpacks, and my friend Dan is working on a Bodhi, I figured I’d start looking into this having thought about it for several years.

I only decided this would be possible once I found a 17” Sonotube I felt was a close enough size, and would build everything to that scale.

Here’s my reference album which I’ll be posting pictures from:

Next hurdle would be the front and back shapes.

I’m going with a layered/sandwich design so I can control each element without affecting another.

Back detail plate would be 16.875” from 1/2” PVC with a 45* bevel edge.

Back detail riser would be 16.875” from 1/4” PVC to create a small lip detail right at that seam.

Inside support ring would be 16.125” and about 5/8” wide from 1/4” PVC to help mount the back plates.

Front detail plate would be 16.885” from 1/2” PVC with a 45* bevel edge. The cutouts were eyeballed by “feel”, and would be tweaked once it was cut out and the surface distances between the shapes could be evaluated.

Front detail riser would be 16.885” from 1/4” PVC to again create a small lip detail right at that seam. With the same cutouts to visually reinforce the inner edges.

Another inside support ring would be 16.125” and about 5/8” wide from 1/4” PVC to help mount the front plates.

The little surface details on the front plate would either be two keystone pieces of 1/8” PVC, with the boarder cut out and glued to the surface. Ultimately it would be a 1/4” piece with the center plowed/washed out… leaving the boarder behind.

Until I make something more accurate, an expansion coupling will have to do.

I have an extra IG-88 chest detail for the front of the box.

Haven’t explored and figured out what parts the center gak pack is made of.

The frame appears to be from a Boy Scout backpack (Yucca is the soft pack and Frontier is the frame itself).

One happy discovery was the waist buckle. A repair tech was in the shop and saw I had “Star Wars stuff” up on the screen. Explained what I was working on and mentioned in passing I hadn’t identified the buckle. He said “Oh, that’s from a dirt track racing harness! It’s called a link latch.”

What do you know… lol

Then I was able to zoom in on a promo pic and identify the side belt connector as a twist turn lock. I’ll have to pick up a 28mm and 35mm version to see which size is best.

Front detail plate, front detail riser with the inside support ring in place.

Surface details look a little too wide...

So I'm going to cut those down 1/2" by hand and then using a donor piece, add the outer ridge.

Here I use another edge so I can keep the same radius angle.

Much better.

The outer ridge of those surface details feel too thick, so when the time comes, I'll take those parts to the sander and reduce them by half. I think then it will fit that space the best.

Sonotube for the core, and with the top mocked in place.

The straps are all bespoke, and the closest thing I could find to repurpose with a similar behind the neck yoke was a set of furniture moving straps. I'll cover them and add the box-pleating details. And by chance, they have the right size and shape tri-glides I can use!

If anyone in the UK can help me find a garden hose with this style reinforced end, you will be rewarded.

Wh00t!!

So I was convinced it had to be something from the UK, being filmed over there... got onto eBay.co.uk since those results don't show up over here. Did some searches for garden hose attachments, and stumbled upon the "HozeLock" connector system. It's dead-nuts in size, shape and details.

Ordered two sets to play with, and then mold if it works.

Very cool! And how wonderful that you've identified a couple parts!

One thing that always puzzles me: why take a photograph of your monitor instead of just taking a much higher quality screenshot?
