Only took 18 months - here's a slightly crappy pic of the finally finished article. A layer of cold cast porcelain, real 18k gold leaf, antiqued to within an inch of it's life, 8 different shades of blood, ultra light weight, etc etc!

Beautiful work, I love the subtle paint cracking around the nose and temples.

Any chance you have a write up of the build process? I'd love to know more about your weathering techniques.

Thanks for the kindness guys - means a lot coming from fans of the game who are used to the high quality work that's shown around here: it's been a steep leaning curve for me (and a lot of work). I'm not planning on a "run" - these just take too flipping long for me to make and I have a little OCD when it comes to the detail to want to churn them out. I'll most likely ebay a few to try and claw back a fraction of the $ i've sunk in, but that all I'm planning ATM as far as sales. If I change my mind I'll let you know.

Volp - I have actually documented most of the process, but none of it will be news to people here - bog standard mold/cast/clean/mold/accidentally break/repair/mold/cast etc etc. The weathering is mostly trial and error but the short version is...

The outer layer of the mask is a mixture of polyester pigmented resin and cold cast porcelain - that's then dimpled and chipped then backed with fibreglass. I used a two part varnish that cracks when dry on the "stress points" and a lighter broad cracking version on the ears and forehead - and then highlighted it to bring out the texture - with both acrylic stains and antiquing paints.

The gold I did in 4 layers - a base gold paint, then a dirty wash, a layer of gold metal leaf and a final layer of yer actual real gold leaf. Each time I put a layer on I worked it over in places with incredibly fine sandpaper, or with a cotton rag dipped in white spirit so the underlying layer showed through. I dirty wiped it with similar stain and acrylic each time. As if thats not enough I stained each layer of varnish a different hue and applied that lightly and roughly so it wasn't uniform.

Hope that helps?

Pics aren't loading now for some reason but I saw this earlier. INCREDIBLE job on the build up. I love the crackling paint too! I'll add to the chorus, any of these going to be sold?

The weathering is amazing.... That is one thing I have a terrible time of.. I can never get it to look that good... Now where is the Big Daddy Helmet? ; )

Great work. That two-part cracked varnish looks fantastic. Could you please tell us name of the product?

It's simply incredible!
Oh how I would LOVE to have that mask on display :D
The attention to detail and all the grunge and crack makes this mask so beautiful <3
