Does somebody have a good source of stills for Robin William's suit ? I have a friend who is looking for good closeups. The DVD is useful, but there are still parts that don't show well at all.

Have you already checked out EdgeFX's site?

holy crap that was neat... :eek

Every several months this idea comes up again, and I get all excited again :(

For what purpose would your friend be needing good closeups for?

:D

I spent 8 or 9 months working on that film at Edge FX. What exactly are you looking for? Pictures are going to be more scarce now that Steve Johnson closed his doors, and we're not really supposed to distribute anything besides. If you need a specific detail photo or "how we did it" info, I'll try to give you the low-down to the extent that I'm allowed.

that skull when you click that link is absolutely amazing looking. The site itself though seems really difficult to navigate through easily.

Steve Johnson closed down, too? Who still has a shop open? Bottin hasn't done anything in years, Baker is semi-retired. I know shops open and close to accomidate the work flow, but dang, all the guys I admired are either retiring or getting pushed out?

Why did steve close down...any inside info?
[/b]

The short answer (in part anyway) is that he was burned out on the politics of getting shows. Spending months designing and then having the production take the designs to someone else who would do it for less $. It was a long time coming. He's talked about it for years. Then he sold his shop and opened a new "smaller" one only to close the doors the week he was supposed to move in. Everything (displays, furniture, and all) have been sold off over the last few months on Ebay.

That is kind of sad. He did AMAZING work on all the movies he was involved in.

I read this article about an fx company that was hired to do some handheld pda-like devices. They did a fine job and it looked very convincing with working graphics etc. When they showed it to a producer she smiled. When they mentioned the price she smiled again and said it was too bad they were trying to con her. She said her own fully working PDA cost only a fraction of that price.

Of course she didn't figure out that the R&D cost of he PDA is spread of hundreds of thousands of units rather than a dozen or so hand-made ones.

So they went with another company who made a very simple one with a clear plastic overlay. Didn't look good at all, but they got their money's worth apparently.

I met steve a few times and i'm sorry that he has closed shop. I really enjoyed his work for many years. With so many people leaving the FX biz who are the new masters of physical effects now?

It's become more and more common over the last few years to higher a company to design a job, use their background and experience to get good concepts, and then take those concepts elsewhere for less $. On one show I worked on, we designed something like 35-40 characters and only ended up making the 4 most complex ones while the others all went to a foreign company for less $ than it would have cost me to make them in my garage with no overhead or profit. They of course butchered the concepts. You get what you pay for...

I've worked with nearly all the big shops over the last 15 years, and Steve delivered the best innovative and non "cookie-cutter" work hands down. Rarely do Baker, Winston, or any of the other big shops ever come close to the bar Steve would try to set on every job for new and different processes and techniques. They might deliver good work, but would never go above and beyond the way Steve did. He may have seemed a little "off" sometimes, but his closing is certainly a huge loss to the practical FX industry. It's really too bad he was never recognized the way Rick and Stan are.

Stan is still around, although I personally sat in an employee meeting there a few years ago when he said he was going to concentrate on branching out into other areas like CG and such. I think his tune has changed back since then since he seems to be staying busy with a lot of practical stuff....

ADI and KNB are still around. KNB is certainly getting bigger every year.

The new kid on the block is Spectral Motion. Generally delivering good work and certainly getting bigger.

Weta of course is big after Kong and Lord of the Rings.

Rick comes and goes...
