Beginner prop build-Any ideas?

I just bought a resin kit unpainted as a little warm up for a prop build it cost me £36 pounds inc postage and should come in a few weeks ill update with pics.

This will be my first ever project (if you can call it that) and i was wondering if any more experienced prop makers had any ideas for a beginner prop build.

Wash in warm water with a degreaser like DAWN soap to remove mold release and any other oils that may be on the surface.
If the water is to hot it will soften and warp the resin.

Clean up seams, bubbles, etc.

Primer then do more clean up, primer until everything is to your liking.
Paint.

For primer I use Dupli-color automotive primer, don't know if you have that brand in the UK.
