Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Well from all the spoiler-free reviews I've read and watched, it seems all the elements are in there for a great film, apparently Affleck is the bomb, Cavill's good, Gadot steals the show and Eisenberg is good, albeit non traditional Luthor (regarding him, it seems that if you hate him before you see the movie, you'll hate him in the movie anyway, no surprise there), the action is good but there isn't that much of it actually, the plot holds itself together ... I've even seen several reviews saying it makes them look forward to the rest of the DCEU !

But it's the way the film is put together that went wrong from what I understand. So basically Snyder is the problem. Seems like his visuals are on point, but story-telling and editing isn't his strong suit. The editing and pacing seems the be the biggest flaws.

I'll make my own opinion tonight, but I've also heard that despite the flaws the film is still quite entertaining, and this is my n°1 priority in movies, so i'm looking forward to having a good time.

If you see people rooting for this film to fail, there's probably a reason behind it.

Amy Adams is gorgoues... but she doesn't LOOK the part of how lois lane is typically portrayed. she seems more like cheerleader or valley girl lois lane.

also in man of steel, I didn't buy their romance setup at all. she just happens to be one of the first women superman really meets and from that we are supposed to buy a romance instantly forming, just because it kind of has too...

for gal gadot, I keep thinking she looks more like paris hilton type than wonder women. way too thin and perfect feature type... just the cadence seems off. Linda carter, with a bit more muscle and tougher stance, is my wonder woman.


But I agree on dark, grim and brooding. That was my entire problem with Superman. There WAS No Hope, like his symbol was representing. It was all dark, moody, boring. just like smallvile, with clark kent pining more about lana than actually trying to learn about his powers and do good in the world. It's all so depressing.

And THAT is why, to me at least, the Marvel movies are a breath of fresh air. they are fast pace, good action, great little quotable moments...and...gasp...FUN! hell, in Thor 2 the 'ta daaaaa' moment gets a huge laugh from me every time I see it, as well as the broke girl saying the name of thors hammer as it passes by her quickly. fun little moments like that prove the marvel people get their characters. I haven't seen this from the DC universe since Batman Begins.

I think it's probably a safe bet that Civil War will be a lot more fun than BvS because Marvel just has a better understanding of their characters and how to make an entertaining movie at this point. The Winter Soldier managed to be serious while at the same time still being fun and exciting and even Age of Ultron, which was a disappointment after the first Avengers flick, still had some pretty great moments. I don't know many people who would call Man of Steel "fun"(even though the opening sequence on Krytpon was amazing and the last 45 min. was an awesome visual spectacle) and I think BvS just looks like a lot more of the same.

And most of the time DC is so AFRAID to be family friendly and make these characters true to what they are, that their attempts at adult and serious either come off as goofy (FlashPoint Paradox where every major characters dies a horrific, blood and guts death), or just plain out of place (Batman: Bad Blood. Turning Batwoman into a lesbian for no reason and having her fight in a kitchen with full on lingerie shots).

Your opinion regarding Kate Kane's orientation is unfounded and disrespectful. Kate Kane aka Batwoman has been a lesbian character in the DC Universe since the 52 series that was launched back in 2006. She took over as main character in Detective Comics after 52's run, had her own comic series afterwards which wound up being one of the rare pre-New 52 series to carry over into the New 52 and has received a lot of fan fare with her appearance in DC's still running Bombshells series.

And when it comes to her character, the only 'out of place' thing that DC ever did to her was when they ordered JH Williams III to not have Kate and Maggie get married, even when the latest issue at the time ended with a whole page shot of Kate embracing Maggie, sharing a kiss and proposing to her. As a result of DC's order, JH and his other writing partner left the series and the sales of the comic dropped. To make matters worse, DC hired a writer who tried to win back the fan base by substituting the chemistry between Kate and Maggie... with Kate being in a relationship with a vampire who brainwashes and rapes her. And I thought Spiderman's stance on "No to marriage, yes to deals with Satan!" was bad. Once everyone on the internet called them out on this, they tried writing into the actual storyline that it wasn't actually rape but... some weird vampire thing that was going on. Did that explanation help? No. Sales continued to fall and the series was subsequently cancelled before it's story arc was even finished. So one of DC's pioneering LGBT characters lost her own comic because DC Comics prefer to rape to marriage. Ick.

Taking that colorful history into account and looking at your comment again, I have to ask. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH YOU?! Did you even know any of this before you made that comment? Did you even bother to look up Kate Kane/Batwoman's history before saying "Turning her into a lesbian for no reason" WHEN SHE WAS ALWAYS A LESBIAN!? They didn't take Katherine Kane and have her be a lesbian, they 'created' a new character in the form of Kate Kane who was always like this. And if you need more proof than that, Kate and Katherine even had an issue where the two interacted with each other. Do you have any idea what the response would have been if DC had made Kate Kane straight in Bad Blood? There is nothing you can say to justify that kind of decision that doesn't reek of homophobia. Thankfully, DC didn't go that route and chose to include Batwoman, lesbian and all. And as an added bonus to this Batwoman fan, it also included Renee Montoya, another gay DC character who had the most commanding presence in the original 52 run who sadly hasn't appeared in much since the New 52 launched. While I still think they could do better (LIKE GIVING BATWOMAN HER OWN MOVIE!), this is a great step towards broadening LGBT representation in the DC universe which sadly is a lot more than what Marvel is doing.

So please, stick with your lingerie complaints because there is absolutely nothing wrong with Kate being a lesbian.

Sorry, but it's not a crime against humanity that there aren't any LBGT characters in the Marvel movies and people who focus on stuff like that need to get a grip. I just wanted to bring it up, because to me, it seems like it's DC's way of trying to be adult..and quite frankly, all I want in a comic book movie is fun.

It has been written often that they were close altho not in an exact location. Even in some animated you could sometimes see a traffic sign with the next city being metropolis for example. I havent clicked on your link tho to read the details of your groan factor as i wouldnt want a spoiler loaded link in a spoiler free thread.

Have a read of this, realise that there are people that enjoyed this movie (and not just for the action) and that these negative/mixed reviews, whilst totally fine for peoples opinions, are just that. Yes, it would be great if there was wildly and overwhelming positive response for this, but I dont think that was ever a possibility.


And nowhere have I read that Affleck is "not great" in this film, and I've been scouring tons of reviews. Wolfsburg

I mean, sure, fine, go in with optimistic expectations if you like. There are people who thought that Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, with its robot testicle jokes was a good movie. I'm sure if you dug, you could find some sorta-kinda-favorable reviews or reviews that minimized the craptastic aspects of it, and talked about how visually stunning the explosions and shots of robots punching each other were.

If you're inclined to like this movie already, go for it. Keep the reviews in mind, but don't let anyone harsh your buzz, man. All I'm saying is don't go in expecting an objectively well made film.

The logic behind it? Well, he sounds like a demonic robot because he's using a throat microphone to disguise his voice. I think it's cooler than just growling at people.

Is it well executed? Not really..

Well read some more then. Nothing I've read says he's some sort of revelation or anything more than merely adequate.

It certainly was possible. Sure, it got a lot of criticism before it's release, but movies surprise all the time. For the sake of fairness, I will hold my judgment until I've actually seen it, but a negative response of this magnitude doesn't happen for no reason.

When Papa Kent died of embarrassment in Man of Steel, I was kind of relieved knowing that he would no longer give Superman terrible guidance ever again. Well, he's back. Please tell me that his guidance of 'don't do anything for your own sake' still rings true here.

I'm almost tempted to see it if it did just so I can laugh at how awful it would be just like in Man of Steel.

Thank you for saving me the time to have to type all this out, I feel exactly the same way. I feel like Snyder is like Michael Bays little brother or something, with his approach to filmmaking/editing.

Well I'm back from the theatre and here are my spoiler free thoughts.
First, I liked the movie, but I understand why it gets mixed reviews and even straight bad reviews from some critics. I think you need to be somewhat knowledgeable in the DC lore and a comicbook enthusiast if not a fan to truly understand and like the movie, otherwise quite a few things will go over your head or even seem plain weird. With that said, it is weird sometimes, especially with the dream sequences. There are more than one, I found them rather good, but they do break the pace and even the tone IMO. Confirming what I've read, I agree that these two are a bit all over the place. Was a bit unsettling but in the end it didn't bother me that much.
Now, Affleck was indeed both an awesome Bruce and a ruthless Batman, he might be the best live action batman ever.
Cavill surprised me, I thought he showed a bit more emotion and his superman is definitely heading more towards the Boy Scout every one here seems to want to see.
Gadot was very good too, although her role is not that big, but she definitely kicks ass.
Eisenburg was fine, albeit a bit over the top. He's not the serious imposing Lex from the JLA cartoon or most of the comics, but this Lex is actually Luthor Jr. His father must have been that Lex we know, while he's a lot more sleazy, cunning and borderline deranged actually.
The movie did address the critics MOS got, meaning both fights took place away from civilians if that was a bone of yours, and I found them surprisingly short, even a bit too much for my taste, I wanted more ! About the last fight though, it's not a spoiler that the trinity fights Doomsday, but they really worked together and that was pretty awesome to see.
All in all I had fun, and it definitely did make me want to see the rest of the DCEU ASAP. But like I said, I see the flaws and I don't think it will reach the billion at the BO, it's just not accessible enough for everyone.
