Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Well I'm back from the theatre and here are my spoiler free thoughts.
First, I liked the movie, but I understand why it gets mixed reviews and even straight bad reviews from some critics. I think you need to be somewhat knowledgeable in the DC lore and a comicbook enthusiast if not a fan to truly understand and like the movie, otherwise quite a few things will go over your head or even seem plain weird. With that said, it is weird sometimes, especially with the dream sequences. There are more than one, I found them rather good, but they do break the pace and even the tone IMO. Confirming what I've read, I agree that these two are a bit all over the place. Was a bit unsettling but in the end it didn't bother me that much.
Now, Affleck was indeed both an awesome Bruce and a ruthless Batman, he might be the best live action batman ever.
Cavill surprised me, I thought he showed a bit more emotion and his superman is definitely heading more towards the Boy Scout every one here seems to want to see.
Gadot was very good too, although her role is not that big, but she definitely kicks ass.
Eisenburg was fine, albeit a bit over the top. He's not the serious imposing Lex the JLA cartoon or most of the comics, but this Lex is actually Luthor Jr. His father must have been that Lex we know, while he's a lot more sleazy, cunning and borderline deranged actually.
The movie did address the critics MOS got, meaning both fights took places away from civilians if that was a bone of yours, and I found them surprisingly short, even a bit too much for my taste, I wanted more ! About the last fight though, it's not a spoiler that the trinity fights Doomsday, but they really worked together and that was pretty awesome to see.
All in all I had fun, and it definitely did make me want to see the rest of the DCEU ASAP. But like I said, I see the flaws and I don't think it will reach the billion at the BO, it's just not accessible enough for everyone.

This review is very appreciated. :thumbsup

Wow, it's down to 33% on RT. I wasn't expecting the reviews to be great, but at the same time I wasn't expecting them to be THAT bad. I mean, Affleck's Daredevil has an RT score of 44%, X-Men: The Last Stand was 58%, Hulk was 61% and Spider-Man 3 was 63%. Those were truly awful films and I'd be stunned if it was as bad as any of them, but maybe it actually is. The good news is that it's blowing Fantastic Four's 9% score from last summer out of the water. :lol

I'm actually pleased to see the mixed reviews. Not because I want the movie to "fail", but because...well, let me put it this way. If all of the reviews had been favorable and the movie received a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I'd go to see it with high expectations and probably be disappointed. This way, I can go in with low expectations and I'll probably walk out of the theater liking it. :D

After a good night sleep something else hit me : the score was really a lacklustre, short of the WW theme that was the only good track. Nothing else was memorable, the only good bits were Zod's theme and Superman's theme from MOS. Disappointed in Zimmer and Junkie XL for that. Once again it doesn't worsen the movie but it's one more missed opportunity to shine...

I think the super low reviews are just internet dog piling at this point. There's no way it can be THAT bad...right? Right?! Assuming you like grimdark (as I do).

Well, that's just it. I think people are tired of grimdark as the default setting in the DC universe. For Batman? Sure! Absolutely! It totally fits. For Superman, though? Good God, no!

As for the score, I'm not that surprised at it being lackluster. Zimmer has, allegedly, been phoning it in for quite some time now. Possibly even subcontracting.

It's funny, I can hum the Christoper Reeve "Superman" theme from memory, but I doubt I could identify the MOS Superman theme if my life depended on it.

yep.

they are trying to apply the batman formula to everything. either to try and be more 'adult' or because they think thats the only thing people want to see.

Grim and Dark doesn't fit ollie and arrrow in the tv show either, I don't think. At least flash gets to have fun.

PEople don't believe in scores anymore...

don't believe me?

Do you remember the Knight Rider 2008 theme song? don't blame you. it only had a fraction of the classic in it, and then went off on some bizzare california surger like tangent.
but people remember the 80s theme song to this day.

Michael Bay's TMNT song? nope. nothing that doesn't sound like a dozen other movies out there..most notably avengers.

Big Sprawling music in the new Star Trek? nope. one forgettable main hero theme....and that's about it.

Even Batman Begins had terrible, boring, repeating music in it....not a hint of the classic burton theme.

Either composers today are no where NEAR as original as those from even 20 years ago..
or they get told to tone down the music so it doesn't over shadow everything else. which is a real shame.

I never saw the 2008 Knight Rider and have yet to see the Bay TMNT, but I doubt their themes would stick in my head either. I can still remember the main theme song from "The final countdown" from the 80's movie with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen better than much of anything from today's movies and shows.

Well, when your theme is basically just a repeated low horn blast over and over, it's kinda hard to distinguish it from the other umpteen gajillion themes featuring low horn blasts over and over.

As with all this stuff though, it's subjective isn't it.

The original Superman movie theme - phenomenal.

However I have a genuinely special place for the Man of Steel music. I absolutely love the score of that movie. It's fantastic.

Batman Begins had a distinctive style that was built upon in Dark Knight - and Dark Knights theme sticks with me too.

I think it's important to note that music for film these days is a lot more driven by song rather than score? It has to be surely. I'm sure there are a lot of older pre-millenium films that used songs, but mostly it was scored.

I think perhaps the art of scoring a movie is simply not as popular in line with movie making nowadays. Especially as films start to change, become done in smaller scale, less budgets etc.

Do we have to interject political correctness into everything now, even comic book movies? Sorry, but it's not a crime against humanity that there aren't any LBGT characters in the Marvel movies and people who focus on stuff like that need to get a grip. Seriously, is that really the world's biggest problem right now?

What does that have to do with anything? DC wrote a gay character. A decade ago. Of hundreds of characters. Chances are, DC has plenty of gay staff. How is writing a gay character "political correctness?"

as many problems as I have with this movie....I can't help but wonder if that's the case as well.

There has to be SOMETHING redeeming about it. It's a big tent pole movie. Even Age of Ultron had some nice moments, even though it was nowhere near as fun and exciting, and stole an idea from tmnt The Manhattan Project ;o)

put in another mod request so this thread can stay on topic.

If you actually took time to read the post I was responding to you would see it was his complaint about Marvel not having any LBGT characters in their cinematic universe that I was addressing. And once again I'll say that focusing on stuff like that is completely ridiculous and superhero movies don't need to be bogged down in the PC crap that some people choose to focus on these days.

I did. Again. What does that have to do with anything? If having a gay character in a film somehow bothers you, when these franchises have hundreds of characters and around 1/20 people identify as gay, I don't know what to tell you. "Seriously, is that really the franchise's biggest problem right now?"

Er...including characters of different races and sexuality is more inclusive for readers and is more representative of real life people. When people complain about those things it says more about them then the comics.
