Batman Returns

I will ALWAYS enjoy the first Batman movie and Returns because of the emotional attachment I have with them from being a kid at the time of release.

At the end of the day '89 was just a more well-rounded, better made and somewhat more believable movie.

same here for the emotional attatchment. i have the same thing with batman forever - my film maker/professional/fan purist head says crock of **** but the part of me thats always gonna be a kid just rememberd my dad bringing it home from the rental store when i still lived with him. nothing will ever ruin that film for me cos every time i watch it i go back to that night.

i see what you mean about 89 being more believable, but the beauty of burtons is that its a different take. if you want believeable, you can turn to one of the other batman stories (animated, nolan, comic) to see if thats more what youre looking for.

in my book, burtons batman is great BECAUSE its just completely out there. though i prefer nolans batman, because as you say - you can believe it better.

Batman movies are kinda like James Bond movies. The perfect one only exists in our heads. The real ones are always flawed in some fashion.

Still, for me, the Penguin with his helicopter umbrella was the moment I cashed out, and realized that Burton just wasn't taking the material seriously.

Actually, the Penguin's "helicopter umbrella" was used in the comics long before Burton ever thought of doing a Batman film. In that respect, it's one of the few moments when he did take the original material seriously.

^ It's strange the way the mind works sometimes and the things we mentally latch on to that will break our suspension of disbelief.

For example, the first time I saw Peter Jackson's King Kong remake I bought into the fantasy that there was an uncharted island where pseudo-prehistoric life that included a 40-foot-tall gorilla still existed, but when it came to a guy shooting a giant insect off of a crewmember with a Thompson sub-machine gun without hitting him even once I called b.s.. :lol
